    Post the kernal panic log

Mac OS X: How to log a kernel panic

Also, I would uninstall the antivirus and disable Carbonite.

I concur. Carbonite is using 70% of CPU time which will cause a major slowdown in performance. You don't require AV software.

    Helpful Links Regarding Malware Protection

An excellent link to read is Tom Reed's Mac Malware Guide.

For adware removal see The Safe Mac » Adware Removal Guide and The Safe Mac » Adware Removal Tool.

Also, visit The XLab FAQs and read Detecting and avoiding malware and spyware.

    See these Apple articles:

Mac OS X Snow Leopard and malware detection

OS X Lion- Protect your Mac from malware

OS X Mountain Lion- Protect your Mac from malware

OS X Mavericks- Protect your Mac from malware

About file quarantine in OS X

If you require anti-virus protection Thomas Reed recommends using ClamXAV. (Thank you to Thomas Reed for this recommendation.)

From user Joe Bailey comes this equally useful advice:

    The facts are:

    1. There is no anti-malware software that can detect 100% of the malware out there.

    2. There is no anti-malware that can detect anything targeting the Mac because there

is no Mac malware in the wild, and therefore, no "signatures" to detect.

    3. The very best way to prevent the most attacks is for you as the user to be aware that

the most successful malware attacks rely on very sophisticated social engineering

techniques preying on human avarice, ****, and fear.

    4. Internet popups saying the FBI, NSA, Microsoft, your ISP has detected malware on

your computer is intended to entice you to install their malware thinking it is a

        protection against malware.

    5. Some of the anti-malware products on the market are worse than the malware

from which they purport to protect you.

    6. Be cautious where you go on the internet.

    7. Only download anything from sites you know are safe.

    8. Avoid links you receive in email, always be suspicious even if you get something

you think is from a friend, but you were not expecting.

    9. If there is any question in your mind, then assume it is malware.

Concur with others that MacKeeper is the most likely cause. For most users it will do more harm than good.

A few other ideas if the above doesn't solve it:

    - DivX causes issues for some users, so unless it's something you use a lot, get rid of it.

    - MacFUSE was an issue for most Mountain Lion users, but if you need it to work with other file systems, then just make sure it's up-to-date.

    - Perian is no longer supported and reportedly doesn't work with Mavericks.

Here is the panic log listing.  I had read the EtreCheck was preferred in the discussion forums.

I would guess I am one year too late to qualify for the free recall repair for this model MBP due to the faulty GPU.  I was told by Apple Support yesterday there never was a recall, contrary to the discussion board comments on this topic for this model.  I was encouraged to take the machine in to an Apple store and see if they could offer a trade in.  If this is just a matter of software incompatibility it changes the entire course of response.  I have been using MacKeeper for years on multiple machines with good results - some shortfalls in potential assistance but no actual harm done.  This would be the first major problem.  With Carbonite, there have been major frustrations mainly with their use of bandwidth limiters when you need to download your own files after a failure.  Their daemon is eating my CPU's lunch on this machine - hasn't been as bad on others.  I would appreciate hearing the community opinion on Carbonite and how / whether to continue using it since we have a lot invested in it at present (seven other machines).  This machine is the only one having kernel panics related to GPU.

The problem is likely due to the discreet GPU failing. Download gfxCardStatus 2.3 and use it to disable the GPU. This is a temporary workaround until you get your motherboard replaced.

Got rid of DivX, Perian, Growl as recommended in discussion boards.

Got level 2 tech support from Carbonite - deselecting several files from a list they had that caused Carbonite to get hung up -- told to wait 24 to 48 hours for the backup process to complete the revision and should see less CPU usage.  As of 20 hours later, still seeing CarboniteDaemon using 89% of CPU, but no kernel panics since then - running continuously, allowing sleep mode overnight.

As for GPU possible cause, I'll have to wait and see if Carbonite support is correct before going down that path.  The machine is only 4 years old and Apple claims no recall ever occurred on this item.  I live 210 miles away from the nearest Apple store, so it's a big deal to take it in.  I would consider it a sweet deal to be able to trade it in for a retina display model, depending on the pricing.

After 3 calls with tier 2 and finally one call with tier 3 support from Carbonite, after multiple deselections of files to back up, it was decided Carbonite was not exactly misbehaving and that a OS repair was in order.  They also recommended uninstalling the perpetually not responding HP Product Research app showing up on Activity Monitor.  I could not find this app via Spotlight and neither could MacKeeper Smart uninstaller.  Any suggestions?

I am at the point where I must consider getting another platform to do development on which runs nothing but native apps -- no Carbonite.

Although Spotlight is OK for finding and launching normal Applications, it doesn't find anything that has been tucked away elsewhere. You need something like EasyFind for any serious searching, and I wouldn't trust MacKeeper to do anything for me, but we've already been through all that.

Most likely it is part of some legacy HP installation which you no longer use.

Open System Preferences->Users & Groups->Login Items tab for your user.

Highlight HP Product Research and click the minus "-" button at the bottom of the column to keep it from launching at login and showing up in Activity Monitor until you have a chance to track down the software involved.

Thanks - I needed the reminder about Login items.  Found HP Product Research there and deleted it.  I had followed the advice to uninstall and reinstall HP software and found some legacy software from HP which I did not reinstall yesterday.  HP Product Research still showed up in Activity monitor after the reinstall, but was working - not stuck in Not Responding mode.

Carbonite  support left me with trying to pause it during the day and see if a kernel panic occurs without Carbonite active.  I will try this for a while.  It was perpetually scanning through Aperture and iPhoto libraries tying up the CPU and this is considered normal behavior by the company.

I will give this another week to sort out - no panics since last Carbonite support session and after uninstalling / reinstalling HP software.

I will look to acquire EasyFind, thanks again.

Finally had Carbonite paused when another kernel panic occurred.
