The iMac G4 was made during the transition period between Airport regular and Extreme.
To see which your iMac G4 accepts, first identify its age properly here:
https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-6413
Then read this tip
iMac: AirPort- and AirPort Extreme-Ready Models
If yours is not Extreme ready, it only supports the card here:
http://store.rokland.com/products/apple-airport-wireless-card-for-mac-imac-g3-g4 -wifi?utm_source=googlepla&utm_medium=cpc
And only supports the insecure WPA or WEP on 802.11b. The Extreme supports 802.11g and WPA2.
For older iMac G4s an ethernet wireless bridge with a minimum of 802.11g is recommended unless you are over 150 feet (450 meters) from an Apple Airport base station, and over 1500 feet from a non-Apple wireless router.
The Extreme ready Macs support this card:

at 802.11g. Note, 802.11n did not become available until Core2Duo or Xeon Macs in 2006.
Edit: 802.11b limits your wireless network to 11 Mbps. 802.11g with only one client limits your wireless network to 33 Mbps.
