I met a guy who claims he does not have phone service - no contract - no data plan - he bought a "hotspot" and makes calls, texts, facetime, email, fecebook, everything - total communication everywhere all the time for free. It was a casual meeting and I didn't get his contact info. to verify and research. IS THIS POSSIBLE?

this was the clearest answer - BUT Viber is only free if the people I call have Viber, right? What about free text with voice (Pinger). Also thinking of a Magic Jack. I'm moving to Mexico - that's why all these questions. I have a Mexican SIM card (my Iphone is factory unlocked), but loading it costs an arm and a leg. Same as when I go to France - I just switch out my SIM card, and don't phone the US - just FACETIME, etc. in WIfI zones. My iphone is unlocked. I switch out my US SIM with a Mexican one there, and a French one when I'm there, but loading time/data is cost prohibitive. I am researching Pinger.com. Apparently I can accumulate free call minutes by watching short promos - to a point. The guy I met had accumulated over 500 free minutes. This is an intriguing concept!
For most of those purposes, yes, but for a few, no. You would need to use alternatives to messaging and calls (such as Skype). The internet and all internet-dependent apps/services would work fine. I at one point was considering just using a hotspot, but there is one big drawback: YOU CANNOT MAKE EMERGENCY / 911 CALLS WITH SKYPE or almost all other phone alternative apps.
You use third-party software such as Skype or other VoIP service that only requires Wi-Fi. These plans may or may not provide texting. FaceBook will work over Wi-Fi as does email and FaceBook.
No. Read what others have said, but if you want to use a phone to actually make phone calls, then you need a sim card from a carrier and preferably a carrier that is iPhone approved.
