Q: Intermittent no cellular service on startup

Hi, I have a ipad mini 32gb (non-r).  It is on Telus cellular network.  Intermittently, I have no cell data service when I power on the mini or if I switch from wifi to 3g.when I'm going out.  This is intermittent and happens 2-3 times a week.  the only way to bring back cell service is to completely power down the ipad and then back on.  It will not work if I just try to toogle the cellular data.  Wifi still works.  It happens on my 16gb mini too.  Any idea?

iPad mini, iOS 7.1.2

    1. Check for a carrier settings update:

    No updates

    2. it is running latest of ios.  7.1.2

3,4,5.  I turn on and off cell data all the time.  When I'm at home, it is always off.  I power off/on all the time.  I'm on the right carrier.

it definitely isn't a coverage issue.  I'm at the same spot when I power it on and off.  I sometime leave it on and drive from one end of the city and get no service.  If I power it on and off and it will get connection again.  As for resetting my iPad, I only will do that as a last resort.  And I've a lot of wifi profiles that I saved and I know a network reset will cause me to lose it all as wifi profiles are not backup.  The first time this happened to me, the tech at my phone company asked me to do this and I lost them all.  The phone still didn't work after that.  I was stupid that time as I didn't power cycle my ipad.  Also, the issue isn't with my iPad either.  I had 2 other ipads and it happened on all of them.  The only reason I didn't book a Genius is that this is intermittent but it happens frequent enough that it is very annoying.  I had done support for a while on PC's and I really want to do as much investigation as possible before I head there.

    Thanks for your time!

Ask your operator to replace your SIM. It might actually be a problem there. Of course, it could also be a problem with the SIM slot in the iPad, but a SIM is much easier and less expensive to replace and test.

Come to think of it, you are probably rt in pt one. It could not be two as this happened in 3 iPads with exactly the same symptom.  Thanks for the hint!

It looks like it is the SIM.  I have not got that problem since the Apple Store change the SIM.
