I imported a short video clip from my iphone to my iphoto application on my macbook. Can I convert a frame from that video clip to a photo?

Thank you for taking the time to reply and make a suggestion. I copied the movie to QT. The only thing I found in there was the ability to try the movie. I tried that and trimmed it to one clip but it is still a movie and not a photo. Am I missing something?
Yes. Try using Quick Time Player to do that.
I don't know. I think you must be able to select a clip first. Once selected you would then either Save or Export it. If QT doesn't work, then try something else such as VLC Media Player 2.1.5, for example.
QuickTime 7 can extract still frames. "File > Export > Movie to Picture". This command is missing in the newer QuickTime versions.
A simple way to create a still frame e in iPhoto is to view the video at full screen, and then take a screen capture of the frame you want - Shift-command-3.
Added: Aperture's video editor can extract still frames, but even iMovie does no longer support the extraction of still frames as image files. iMovie 9 creates a still video clip instead.
