App Store > Updates - Internal Server Error - Read

Hi everybody,

In the last three weeks my MacOSX Mavericks started to behave abnormally while checking for updates in App Store. My system is a Mac Mini (Late 2012) running OS X 10.9.4.

The use case is as follows: I open App Store and go to Updates. The entire window (almost) hangs for a while (up to one or two minutes) and then I get a message like the following below:

Internal Server Error - Read

The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.

Reference #3.c148212e.1407869740.2e8e86e

or

Reference #3.67020ecf.1407870503.1c3dbb42

Is it something I should do on my side about it?

Thank you.

So is this something that just happens every now and then? I've rebooted three times this morning, and still I'm getting this error—

You know, it would be nice if they'd phrase this stuff so we mere mortals could grasp some meaning from it. That "Reference #" looks important, but what are we supposed to make of it? "... internal error or misconfiguration ... "—huh?

I don't need to know where this "internal server" sits, nor do I want to know the name of the techie who spilled his Starbucks latté into it. I just want to know what I need to do. Do I wait patiently and try again later? Reboot my machine until at last I get there? Go to the Community and ask questions? Visit the Genius Bar ... ?

That error is typically what you would see when something is wrong server-side, although it depends on how the App Store app is implemented. So, it's just as likely that the problem is on Apple's side.

Another thing to try: I discovered that you can refresh the page just like a webpage by using ⌘-R, and that fixed it for me. (If it is implemented like a web page, that might overcome continuing to see the error due to page caching.)

If it still doesn't work, my suggestion is to wait it out and try again later, because it's probably Apple's update server (or a communication problem between you and them).

I suspect that in my case it's Little Snitch holding my data usage in check (could be the same on your end, or a router blocking connections, etc.) and iTunes screaming bloody murder that it can't call Mommy Apple. Also, see Resolve issues between iTunes and third-party security software - Apple Support which may explain better what's going on with this error and how to resolve it. Alas, I don't find any way to resolve it by having iTunes STOP making Internet calls without my explicit permission. :-(
