Is it possible to "zero" erase on Maverick OS?

Is it possible to "zero" erase on Maverick OS?

In the Utilities erase (under Disk Utilites) my "security and my "Erase Free Space" options are grayed out. Meaning I can see them but not choose them. I am the sole user with no work groups etc. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Are you attempting to erase the disk drive that is where OS X is running from?

Why do you want to erase the disk drive?
