Q: I'm using system 10.6.8 Just today, my mail preferences will no longer hold on to my password. I must enter it every time I want to get mail.

Just today, my computer died while showing some battery power left. Ever since then, my email program will not hang on to my password. I go to mail preferences enter the password, click on save changes and the minute I close preferences, the password is gone.

iPhone 5, iOS 6.1.4

Are you using any system maintenance applications? These may actually damage preference files in their attempt to maintain them. The worst is MacKeeper, which has these directions to uninstall:

Do not install MacKeeper

Password – Mail keeps asking for Password

Try deleting the password from Keychain Access.

Try running Keychain First Aid and resetting the original keychain.
