USB to Ethernet Cable Unplugged

Hi All,

I've recently got a MacBook Air 13' and later on realised it does not have an ethernet port. I've purchased "Moshi" brand USB to Ethernet Cable and it worked fine for the first couple of days. But after that, problem started to happen - I am now unable to connect to internet using Ethernet. I've done some research and tried below steps hoping to resolve the issue but no luck :-(

1. Restarted PC checked cable to confirm there is internet reception on wired connection. Using USB to Ethernet - Failed

2. Reset PRAM - NVRAM - Using USB to Ethernet - Failed

3. Went to Network configs. Deleted all connections wired and wireless and added again Using USB to Ethernet - Failed

4. Also on Network configs - set up a new location then added connection. Using USB to Ethernet - Failed

5. Went back to where I bought the cable and asked for replacement - Staffs at Virgin Store were very kind to replace my old one. but when I got to office Using USB to Ethernet - Failed :-(

I prefer to use USB to Ethernet as my Thunderbolt port is used for my secondary screen (via VGA cable). Here are the specs of my Mac

Early 2014 - 13 in, i7 processor, 8GB RAM. Software OS X 10.9.4

I am hoping someone out there can help me with the issue.

pleaaaaasssseeeeee :-(((

MacBook Air, OS X Mavericks (10.9.4)

Hi,

When you say "USB to Ethernet cable unplugged" are you seeing a picture like this on your Network panel in Sys Prefs?

You may need to reset your router. It is unlikely the fault is in your USB-Ethernet adapter seeing that you got it replaced. It could be just a loose connection where your ethernet cable connects to the router.

To anyone out there having the same issues.

I was able to resolve this by doing an SMC reset

=> shift+control+alt+Power button - do this when your mac is off and wait for the LED on the charger to blink or change colors

after this, have started pc again.

disconnected the adapter from both ethernet cable and usb port on mac

reconnected the adapter first

then reconnected the ethernet cable.

you have to do the cable reconnection in this order. I have found that if you have the ethernet cable immediately connected to the adapter, the system does not recognise it somehow.

Oh, and there is also a matter of creating a new location - saw this in other forums. though it did not help at first, am not entirely sure if this contributed to the solution.

just thought I'd share this to help others with the same issues.

Cheers.

Hi Cunnla,

thanks for the reply. I finally got someone to listen 🙂

Anyways, I feel like this has something to do with my Mac settings because I have tried the cable using another Mac and it works just fine 😟

is there anything I should check with my network configurations to make this work?

this is a new Mac and it is just frustrating to have this issue. I love my mac but now I am held back to using its full potential because of this darn issue.

Any other suggestions please?

So it looks like it's not the router if the other Mac works on it. But you could try a reset, just in case. You do not mention it, but have you tried the Assist me button at the bottom of the Network panel? That should show what is wrong. Other than that, as it is a new machine, you may be able to get telephone technical help from Apple and they can walk you through it over the phone. If not, take it back to the Apple store and have them check it out.
