Q: OS Mavericks and Scanners

I installed Mavericks and my Ricoh MFP would no longer scan.  Unable to find an answer (Thanks for not responding Ricoh tech support!), I replaced it with an Epson WF-3640 MFP.  I installed the latest software, but have the exact same problem as with my Ricoh.  I ran the Epson Scan Settings utility and it says "Scanner is ready, Interface USB."  When I attempt to scan, the scanner warms up, feeds the page and then an error message "Cannot properly communicate with scanner.  Make sure the scanner is turned on, connected, setup to scan, an no errors occurred in the scanner."  I tried reinstalling the software, restarting.  Nothing works.  I alternatively receive error messages saying the scanner is not connected or a driver cannot be found.  I am beginning to think it is Mavericks and not the scanners.  Any help is appreciated.

The correct driver version is 9.17 and should be available through Software Update. Did you get your update from there or from Epson? - and is it that version? If you have 9.17 you could try contacting Epson support.

That is the version I am using.  I tried Image Capture, it recognizes the scanner, but constantly responds "Scanner reported an error - the scanner is busy."

I think Epson Support is your most likely next step.

What happens if you log into another user (create one if necessary) on your Mac and try to scan from there?

still did not work.  got a "boolean loop" where the scanner says "scanning" and computer says "scanner busy" while nothing happens.  Something is stuck in memory somewhere.  I cannot cancel the scan, as the endlessly displays "canceling" and nothing happens.  Disconnected and unplugged scanner, then reconnected and restarted.  Quit Image Capture and restarted Mac.  Scanner comes back up with "scanning" and nothing happens.  Image capture shows scanner as busy.  Can memory be stored in a USB cable?  Can't figure out how to clear this.  Went to Printers and Scanners and it says there are no jobs in progress.

It must be the cable, I tried setting up the printer to connect via wifi network and now everything works properly.

I think I found a solution. After unplugging and replugging cables, rebooting the printer, trying to clear anything in the queue (there was nothing), I went into Activity Monitor and quit the Epson Scanner process. I rebooted my computer and the scanner was working again. Good luck!
