Aug 13, 2014 6:23 PM in response to charlie alphaby David Harbsmeier,>>1. Is there anything I can do?
Yes. You could continue to use FCE HD on an older Mac with the Nattress plugins that were designed to work with that NLE. You did not purchase plugins that work with FCP-X. It isn't Nattress' fault that you only used them "a handful of times." Of course, another thing you could do would be to purchase plugins that are compatible with FCP-X.
>>2. What do people do with obsolete software?
Sell it on ebay, craigslist or similar sites.

Thanks for your response. Unfortunately, using the software with the older mac is not an option. You are correct, I did not purchase the plugins for FCPX but for FCE HD. However, per the company website they advertise the plugins with free upgrades - and to be honest that drew me to them.
Ebay might me the best option in the end. Technology is a risk nowadays, especially when software gets upgraded and computers can't handle the amount of info the new software carries. If computers and software were to stay relevant for at least a few years upgrading would not be necessary for a few years. What you purchase for $100 now might loose 40% of value in one years period.

Aug 15, 2014 12:18 AM in response to charlie alphaby Ian R. Brown,Frequently people are tempted to buy effects which they will rarely use . . . . or which would be better if they were rarely used, as a plethora of exotic transitions and effects in a film are the sure signs of an amateur production.
However, occasionally a specific effect, used sparingly, can enhance a project.
There are numerous websites which contain all types of free effects, transitions and templates for FCP X.
Just google for them and here are a couple to get you started.

Note that if you require a specific effect, you can often find a free example by googling.

Aug 19, 2014 4:40 AM in response to Ian R. Brownby charlie alpha,Ian, thanks for your reply. I did checked the webpages. Looks like a wealth of free info. I had come across the fcp.com site before, but it does help to have a direct link to the free plugins.
On another note, I've been using the FCP since 2000. Can't say its been consistent as it is more of a hobby. So i've created simple as well as time consuming videos full of transitions and special effects (Sure hope that they are 100% better than what some friends have paid for their wedding videos) I have seen wedding videos that people have paid $100 if not $1000 for productions that are horrible.

Aug 19, 2014 5:18 AM in response to charlie alphaby Ian R. Brown,Sorry, but I don't understand the point of the second paragraph?
Are you saying that your videos are filled with effects?
If you look at any professional film, such as Hollywood movies, you won't see any transitions 99.9% of the time and on the rare occasions there is one it's usually a subtle dissolve.
For wedding videos all that's required are the occasional soft-focus, dissolves, "looks" and slo-mo . . . all of which are fully catered for in FCE/FCP and FCP X.

Aug 19, 2014 9:25 AM in response to Ian R. Brownby charlie alpha,Fades, dissolves, wipes, slow motion, are some of the most common ones I use. So they are not filled with layers upon layers of special effects, just enough to make it entertaining. Hope that clarifies that.
I do videos for fun and creativity (a step above your iMovie) and no hollywood productions. Using the above effects listed above, split moving screens and film look effect, etc. to keep me and my audience engage as oppose to bored. That's the reason I mentioned videos that are made by companies out there that charge a lot of money yet their product is not the most engaging. That said in my original post, I bought plugins that were more of a mistake as I edit videos as a hobby and not a career. Occasionally I have gotten paid for them and the parties have been satisfied with the end product.
Again, thanks for your links. I appreciate you answering the post and it is good to know that there are professionals that visit these forums.
