You would input them by double click or drag drop. But display will depend on what fonts are supported by the web app you are using. Normally these fonts are much more limited than what is available on your machine, so various symbols will probably not work.

Whatever operating system you are using, you must install a music font like Petrucci. If you have installed a music typesetting application like Sibelius or Finale, it will have done this already, and it will also provide you with a keyboard chart so that you can find the keys for particular musical symbols when typing an ordinary text document.
Finale and Sibelius are quite expensive, but if you don't create actual musical scores, you will find cheaper less-elaborate applications at http://www.finalemusic.com and, doubtless, by searching on the Net.

If it is just a couple notes, try doing Edit > Special Characters. Go to the gear wheel at the top left and select Customize, then check the box for Musical Symbols. Double click or drag/drop to input.
Thank you. Not looking for musical notation. Looking to add a representation for, say, a quarter note io regular text like Pages or Office. I assumed in Special Keys I would find simple musical notes since there's hundreds of Smiley Faces and all kindsof symbols for Left, Right Up, Down, different currencies and such. But I haven't found it yet.
That's very useful for me, too, since I write theoretical and analytical articles on music. Thank you. But of course it does not allow one to specify what the pitch of the quarter note (or whatever) is.
"Go to the gear wheel at the top left and select Customize, then check the box for Musical Symbols." I am on PAGES. EDIT. SPECIAL CHARACTERS. A popup box appears. No gear wheel anywhere on that popup. ???
You can not rely on all web Browsers on all user platforms to use the special Unicode characters.
Especially Internet Explorer users on older PCs running older Windows, which is most people.
The most secure method is to use .jpegs or .png files.

Re: Typing Music Symbols -- THANK YOU!!! This has helped me; how obtuse of me not to realize basic music symbols were already available. And STUPID as this probably sounds: Even though I DO have (and use) Sibelius, I'm absolutely CLUELESS about how to integrate Sibelius with other software and programs (e.g., transferring [or, "pasting"] written music from Sibelius directly into the body of an email text -- NOT as an attachment! --, or copying a word document [e.g. poetry] from a [.docx] file directly into Sibelius -- again, NOT as an attachment or "auxiliary", but integrated WITH THE MUSIC NOTATION. I've found Sibelius' so-called "user guide" almost NEVER user-friendly. Either their "Instruction(s)" constantly fail to be edited concurrent with each software update, or some tech geek is clueless about progressive keystroke requirements and sequence of [verbal] directions. (Incidentally, not all of us were born with "Computerese" as part of our DNA.). I don't mean to "press my luck" Michael, but I need to know whether there is some resource (other than the Sibelius Software people) whereby I can learn ' "APPLIED SIBELIUS" '. I'm not joking. It's almost as though I have some chronic, systemic and or congenial learning aptitude deficiency. On Sibelius Software alone I have much more capability than I am able to figure out how to use. It isn't that I lack either creative ideas nor [musical] intelligence, just practical facility relevant to documentation. For example, there must be SOMEone SOMEwhere who can teach -- whether in a group or privately -- how to format a musical stage production. Every time I've posed this question to Sibelius (or, God for-F _ c _'n'-give, stankin' AVID!) I've gotten some ****-brain fog response, as though I'm speaking with hair-lip and cleft palate some obsolete Romulan dialect.
Any ideas? Thanks again. Don GvK1950@aol.com
Okay, thank you. That was more complete and I found basic music symbols. Very good. Now, how do I use them in online web based documents? (Assuming Chrome, Safari)
