10.9.4 is not a Classic operating system. E-mail generally does not support formatted text. It does support Rich Text, but that is not supported by all e-mail clients, and neither is HTML. So unless you are willing to deal with unformatted text

and use asterisks (*) for bullets, and no italic or boldface, you are better off sending your CV in either a Word Attachment or Acrobat attachment to the employers you desire to e-mail.

https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-6941 offers some alternatives to Microsoft Office, though their formatting is not always as precise as Microsoft Word. So if you have an original in Microsoft Word, it is better to buy either Microsoft Office for Mac or Windows and run the operating system you need. All Mac OS X word processors can save as PDF using the Print command to print to a printer. Once saved as PDF, you can shrink with http://www.smallpdf.com/compress-pdf/ before e-mailing or attaching via an online application system.
