My I Phone 5c is stuck at the silver apple logo and wont boot up. It only displays this well plugged in but when i remove it the screen goes black and the phone wont respond

Try a restore in recovery mode:
If you can't update or restore your iOS device
This will erase all the data currently on the iPhone but if you have been making regular back ups then it will be fine as you can restore from that afterwards.
When I try to put it in recovery mode, the phone goes completely black once removed from the charger and when I plug it in to the computer the screen is black. I believe that the battery itself is dead at this point
Try a reset:
- Hold the home button and sleep/wake button down at the same time for about 15-20 seconds seconds. When the Apple logo appears release both buttons.

You have a hardware problem, possibly a defective battery. The iPhone 5c is still under warranty. Take it to Apple or an Apple authorized service provider.
