what is wrong with ipad keyboard?

it used to work normally but now when i want to capitalize a letter, or use a question mark/exclamation mark, the "shift" button is ****** up. so for example if i want a capital o, when i hold the shift and hit o, it doesnt type an o and instead gives me the options for the extra characters that appear when you hold the o down for a couple seconds o. this is very annoying when typing multiple capital letters for symbols. heres what it looks like when i hold the shift(up arrow) and hit the exclamation mark multiple times for many exclamation marks: !,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, so if i want multiple ! i have to do it manually each time. i have no idea how this happened but it started recently and its incredibly annoying.

Try this - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.) No data/files will be erased. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430

TThe iOS keyboard does not allow you to hold down the Shift key while typing multiple copies of a letter. You need to tap Shift then the exclamation mark to type the exclamation mark. If you want to type multiple exclamation marks in a row like this !!!!!!!!!! Type the number key to change to the number keyboard. You will find an exclamation mark there that can be typed numerous times in succession. As soon as you tap the space bar the keyboard will return to the letters.

I hate to argue with my esteemed colleagues, but I can hold down on the shift key and repeatedly type the exclamation mark or any other capital letter on the keyboard just as you said that you used to be able to do. I can still do it on my iPad.

!!!!!!???????MMMM... I have never had a problem doing that, just like you described.

You could try resetting all settings. Sometimes that fixes keyboard issues. Settings>General>Reset>Reset all settings

You could try resetting the keyboard dictionary. That should not be a factor at all, but it might not hurt to try. Settings>General>Reset>Reset Keyboard Dictionary.

If you reset all settings, you will have to enter all device settings again. If you reset the keyboard dictionary, all of the words that you "taught" the keyboard will have to be taught to the device again.

Interesting! I swear that I tried tapping and holding on the shift key and could not type a series of "!" or capitol "O" but now, after reading Demo's comments I find I can do exactly that. Maybe my glasses were on upside down earlier. 😝

THanks for the responses. So i tried resetting the ipad, both with the buttons and with resetting all settings. neither worked. when i hold this shift/up arrow and hit the letter o, it shows the list of options for other characters such as õ. i still have to do each capital letter separately if i want more than 1.

so other info, if i hold the arrow and hit o, it gives me the list of other possible o's, but when i select one of them it doesnt actually display the letter, instead it highlights an invisible letter and in the bottom left corner gives me options to copy/cut/paste. anyone have any of ideas? this is getting more and more frustrating.

So Bob did not misread the problem. Holding the shift key down is not the problem. but holding a letter down will show you it's alternates. To get multiples of a letter you must tap it separately as many times as you need. It has always been this way.

What you're describing is normal. Hold a letter down you get the alternatives. There is no holding the exclamation point down for duplicates.

No argument from me. My keyboard acts like yours. I misread the post thinking the OP was holding a key expecting it to automatically repeat.
