Mac OS XDo not buy MacKeeper. Or any other 'tool' that claims it can 'speed up' your Mac.
See -> Do not install MacKeeper. There are many reasons why your machine may be sluggish - a failing hard drive, third-party software, etc. Applications that claim to 'clean' your system are trouble as they very often, if not always, will trash resources that your Mac needs.
Let's look at the third-party software that you're loading at startup first: please download and run EtreCheck and post the results in a reply here.

It looks as if you've an old installation of MacKeeper, already (see the zeobit.MacKeeper Launch Daemon)? You'll need to reinstall MacKeeper and then uninstall MacKeeper (http://applehelpwriter.com/2011/09/21/how-to-uninstall-mackeeper-malware/) to get rid of that. And I don't see anything in your Startup Items that you really need. All of the Kernel Extensions listed above can go (unless you really are using a Wacom tablet - that K.E.'s not loading anyway).
You also need to get rid of Trusteer -> it's a known problem.
Now the hard part - finding all of these extensions (which could be anywhere). I would download the free "EasyFind" from the Mac App Store and search your drive for each item - "hwport" for instance, should find the two files in your startup items. You should put all of the above files in a folder on your Desktop (you'll need your admin password) and once they're all in that folder, restart your machine and run EtreCheck again so you can make certain that the items aren't loading.
Also, since you've Java loading, make sure that you have the very latest version of Java (you can check this by clicking on the Java preference pane under System Preferences.
Call back after you've completed this somewhat lengthy procedure!

Aug 16, 2014 2:51 AM in response to clintonfrombirminghamby Catherine Mary Cecilia,Thank you again for this,
it seems like a daunting task and will have to postpone this until tomorrow.
Just one thing when I find the two hwport items must Iuninstall them or just move them to a desktop folder.
Not sure if I'll succeed in doing whats required but will give it my best shot tomorrow...

Mac OS XJust put them in the folder on the Desktop - I've no idea where they came from (something you installed at some point?) but we can get rid of them safely, I'm sure.
Good luck,
Clinton

Applications1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can read it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press thereturn key.
9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press returnthree times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

ApplicationsIf the output of "etrecheck" is accurate (and I don't know whether it is or not), then kernel extensions have nothing to do with your problem, and any attempt to remove them will be a complete waste of time. Even if they did need to be removed, hunting for files by name would not be the right way to do it.

Mac OS XCatherine Mary Cecilia, that Mac has been affected by a plethora of notoriously troublesome system modifications, to the extent that it bears little resemblance to the Mac it once was. For that reason a complete erasure and reinstallation of your essential software and other files is justified. Depending on the amount of time and effort you wish to expend upon fixing what's wrong with that Mac, and considering that you appear to already have a what is assumed to be a viable Time Machine backup, it may be the most expedient option for recovering a working system. If you agree write back for specific instructions.
Short of that, I recommend the following.
- Remove MacKeeper. Follow the instructions at the end of this post.
- Remove Trusteer Rapport by following these instructions: Uninstalling Rapport on Mac OS X
- Remove PC Tools iAntiVirus by following these instructions: How to Uninstall PC Tools iAntiVirus
- Intrusive adware is present:
- Go to the Safari menu > Preferences > Extensions. If you see any extensions that you do not recognize or understand, simply click the Uninstall button and they will be gone.
- For browsers other than Safari, perform the equivalent actions to uninstall extensions or add-ons.
- To remove unsupported Safari add-ons read and follow the instructions in this Apple Support document: Safari: Unsupported third-party add-ons may cause Safari to unexpectedly quit or have performance issues.
- Additional steps will be required to remove "Genieo":
- Having yet to encounter it personally, I don't have a specific procedure for you, but I suggest you do not attempt to remove its components in piecemeal fashion.
- Removing it incompletely could result in a Mac that will no longer start, leaving you no alternative than to erase it completely and restore it from a backup predating the corruption.
- Other intrusive adware will require additional effort to eradicate. For an explanation of how this may have occurred, how to avoid it in the future, and a potential solution limited to "Vsearch" read How to install adware
Follow these instructions to uninstall MacKeeper. They have been tested with the most recent version of MacKeeper. Earlier versions than the one released in 2012 require more extensive work to uninstall all its components. Never install such junk on a Mac.
If you actually used MacKeeper to alter your system, e.g. "remove excess binaries" or such, you will need to reinstall OS X as well as all your additional software. Uninstalling MacKeeper is insufficient to reverse the corruption it is capable of - once again, that is if you used it.
If you merely installed MacKeeper but did not use it to perform any particular action, the following instructions will suffice.
- If you used MacKeeper to encrypt any files or folders, use MacKeeper to un-encrypt them first.
- Quit the MacKeeper app if it is running.
- Open your Applications folder: Using the Finder's Go menu, select Applications.
- Drag the MacKeeper icon from your Applications folder (not the Dock) to the Trash.
You will be asked to authenticate (twice):
You do not need to provide a reason for uninstalling it:
- Just click the Uninstall MacKeeper button. You will be asked to authenticate again.
After it uninstalls you may empty the Trash and restart your Mac. All that will remain is an inert log file that does nothing but occupy space on your hard disk.
Other problems may exist. Start with the above and evaluate the results.

Aug 17, 2014 1:35 AM in response to clintonfrombirminghamby Catherine Mary Cecilia,Clinton,
I'm nervous of uninstalling Mackeeper as I availed of a trial version just 2 days ago where it analysed my laptop gave a summary and then removed 126 of 2400 infected/corrupt etc files. Does this mean that I could do further damage by attempting to uninstall it?
Someone else (John Galt) in apple support suggested that I might have to do a complete erasure and reinstallation of essential software and files.
I actually tried to purchase Mackeeper yesterday (to complete cleaning of files) but could not for some reason, but it appears to be listed in my applications folder anyway.
I'm wondering would the best option be for me to bring my laptop to an Apple Technician incase I do further damage by attempting to resolve the problem myself?
Thank you again for your advise
Thank you also to others for contributing to my discussion too...

No it didn't. MacKeeper is a fraud and the files were neither "infected" nor "corrupt."
Remove "MacKeeper" as follows. First, back up all data.
"MacKeeper" is a scam with only one useful feature: it deletes itself.
Note: These instructions apply to the version of the product that I downloaded and tested in early 2012. I can't be sure that they apply to other versions.
If you have incompletely removed MacKeeper—for example, by dragging the application to the Trash and emptying—then you'll have to reinstall it and start over.
IMPORTANT: "MacKeeper" has what the developer calls an “encryption” feature. In my tests, I didn't try to verify what this feature really does. If you used it to “encrypt” any of your files, “decrypt” them before you uninstall, or (preferably) restore the files from backups made before they were “encrypted.” As the developer is not trustworthy, you should assume that the "decrypted" files are corrupt unless proven otherwise.
In the Finder, select
Go ▹ Applications
from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-A. The "MacKeeper" application is in the folder that opens. Quit it if it's running, then drag it to the Trash. You'll be prompted for your login password. Click the Uninstall MacKeeper button in the dialog that appears. All the functional components of the software will be deleted. Restart the computer.
☞ Quit MacKeeper before dragging it to the Trash.
☞ Don't empty the Trash. Let MacKeeper delete itself.
☞ Don't try to drag the MacKeeper Dock icon to the Trash.

I uninstalled iAntivirus, Trustee Rapport and Mackeeper.
I then followed your instructions for copying script to Terminator App as above and after about 6 mins' Process completed' appeared in window.
I'll paste results below and await further advice from you on attempting to restore my laptop to it's original level of efficiency.
Thank you to all for offering advice, it's much appreciated.

Some of your user files (not system files) have incorrect permissions or are locked. This procedure will unlock those files and reset their ownership, permissions, and access controls to the default. If you've intentionally set special values for those attributes, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it, but you do need to follow the instructions below.
Back up all data before proceeding.
Step 1
If you have more than one user, and the one in question is not an administrator, then go to Step 2.
Enter the following command in the Terminal window in the same way as before (triple-click, copy, and paste):
sudo find ~ $TMPDIR.. -exec chflags -h nouchg, nouappnd, noschg, nosappnd {} + -exec chown -h $UID {} + -exec chmod +rw {} + -exec chmod -h -N {} + -type d -exec chmod -h +x {} + 2>&-You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command may take several minutes to run, depending on how many files you have. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear, then quit Terminal.
Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1, if you prefer not to take it, or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Start up in Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open. In that window, type this:
res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not going to reset a password.
Select your startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button
Select
▹ Restart
from the menu bar.
B.
Launch the Font Book application and validate all fonts. You must select the fonts in order to validate them. See the built-in help and this support article for instructions. If Font Book finds any issues, resolve them.
Start up in safe mode to rebuild the font caches. Restart as usual and test.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t start in safe mode. In that case, ask for instructions.
If you still have problems, then from the Font Book menu bar, select
File ▹ Restore Standard Fonts...
You'll be prompted to confirm, and then to enter your administrator login password.
Also note that if you deactivate or remove any built-in fonts, for instance by using a third-party font manager, the system may become unstable.
C.
The system is so heavily modified by third-party software that, instead of trying to remove the modifications piecemeal, you should erase the startup volume, reinstall OS X, and then go through the initial setup process, restoring only user data and settings from a backup—not applications or other files. This course of action will be easier and more reliable than trying to clean up a messy system.
Back up all data to at least two different storage devices, if you haven't already done so. One backup is not enough to be safe. The backups can be made with Time Machine or with Disk Utility. Preferably both.
Erase and install OS X. This operation will destroy all data on the startup volume, so you had be better be sure of the backups. If you upgraded from an older version of OS X, you'll need the Apple ID and password that you used, so make a note of those before you begin.
When you restart, you'll be prompted to go through the initial setup process in Setup Assistant. That’s when you transfer the data from a backup.
Select only users and Computer & Network Settings in the Setup Assistant dialog—not Applications or Other files and folders. Don't transfer the Guest account, if it was enabled.
After that, run Software Update.
If the problem is resolved after the clean installation, reinstall third-party software selectively. I can only suggest general guidelines. Self-contained applications that install into the Applications folder by drag-and-drop or download from the App Store are usually safe—but not necessarily "Dropbox" or "Google Drive." Anything that comes packaged as an installer or that prompts for an administrator password is suspect, and you must test thoroughly after reinstalling each such item to make sure you haven't restored the problem.
At your level of experience, you should limit yourself to using software that comes from the Mac App Store, as far as possible. The products are not always very good, but they are safe. You should install other software only with great caution, and be prepared to remove it if it causes problems. Ignore all software ads on the Web. Never change the configuration of your computer in any way because some web page tells you to.
Before installing any software, ask yourself the question: "Am I sure I know how to uninstall this without having to wipe the volume again?" If the answer is "no," stop.
Never install any third-party software unless you know how to uninstall it.
D.
The Wi-Fi adapter may be malfunctioning. If you continue to have problems with wireless networking, make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested.

Thank you so much for this. I have researched links such as 'safe mode,' erase and install', font app etc in preparation.
Now I just have to purchase another back up disc as suggested.
Hope to do this tomorrow.
PS You referred to some third party software; do you think it's safe to reinstall Box? I've recently moved from Dropbox to this App.
Thank you once again for your detailed instructions.
Will let you know how it goes
