Can't erase OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.5 from internal drive

Hello.

For 2 days I've tried everything I could find in this forum, but erasing 10.8.5 from the Fusion drive (3TB)

wasn't possible - my Mac just restarted instead. So I tried to change the partition hoping to find a clue:

I started internet recovery (alt+cmd+R), clicked "Macintosh HD" and the "Partition" tab.

Under "Partition Layout" I couldn't change "Current" (was greyed), but I could click on the [+] button

for splitting the drive space into 2 partitions: "Macintosh HD" + "Macintosh HD 2".

I started the process and the blue progress bar was growing while the following text was displayed:

"Checking catalog file."

"Checking catalog hierarchy."

"Checking extended attributes file."

... and some other lines ("...shrinking...") were displayed so quickly that I couldn't write down everything.

In the end I got the message:

"Partition failed - Partition failed with the error: There is not enough free space

in the Core Storage Logical Volume Group for this operation."

Is this information helpful? How can I make more required space available?

Maybe Terminal could help?

BTW: Where is that space and why is there not enough space (anymore)...?

Tested:

Verify Disk: OK

Verify Permissions: OK

System Information:

SSD: S.M.A.R.T. Status: Verified

HDD: S.M.A.R.T. Status: Verified

Apple Hardware Test: OK

DriveDx.app reported: everything OK

Many thanks!

Hey coxorange,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

Sounds like an issue with the size of the partition you are trying to create.

Mac mini (Late 2012), iMac (Late 2012 and later): About Fusion Drive

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5446

I receive a "disk is too small for this operation" message when creating a partition. Why?

The partition you are trying to create has a larger size than free space available on the hard disk drive. Reduce the size of the partition you are trying to create and try again.

Have a nice day,

Mario

One thing still puzzles me:

We have here another iMac (exactly the same model), and when comparing the information from

About this Mac > More Info... > System Report... > Storage > Macintosh HD there is a difference:

At our other iMac (with original 3TB Fusion drive still installed) I read:

Physical Volumes:

disk0s2:

Media Name: APPLE SSD SM128E Media

Size: 120.99 GB (120,988,852,224 bytes)

Medium Type: SSD

Protocol: SATA

Internal: Yes

Partition Map Type: GPT (GUID Partition Table)

Status: Online

S.M.A.R.T. Status: Verified

PV UUID: 90892A98-240B-4E31-BC77-4B584A90C6CD

disk1s2:

Media Name: APPLE HDD ST3000DM001 Media

Size: 3 TB (2,999,733,223,424 bytes)

Medium Type: Rotational

Protocol: SATA

Internal: Yes

Partition Map Type: GPT (GUID Partition Table)

Status: Online

S.M.A.R.T. Status: Verified

PV UUID: C89F4606-7EB6-498E-964D-74430EEF0C9B

At our Mac with the problem (where the HDD had been replaced recently) the headings

"disk0s2" and "disk1s2" are interchanged -- everything else is exactly the same!

Could the wrong order cause the problem?

Just some feedback in case someone else should have this problem:

The iMac has been sent to Amsys for repair but a repair was not required -- just some terminal commands to re-configure the Fusion Drive (according to http://macs.about.com/od/diyguidesprojects/ss/Split-Your-Fusion-Drive-Apart_3.ht m#step-heading).

To double check the Fusion Drive we did the following:

1. Cmd+R for internet recovery

2. Erased the Macintosh HD - now it worked!

3. Reinstalled Mountain Lion

4. Restored Time Machine Backup
