Q: Double tap Home to jump between apps..broken ?

HI All.

Just received the new 5s 16GB..and what a hair pulling nightmare..from no 'Mail sync" in info.....(until iOS 8 at least) and no ability to jump between apps with open dialogue boxes  .... oh why'd id my old 4s WiFi chip have to die......oh yes I remember..I upgraded to iOS 7 ..that killed it.

Anyway ..enough moaning g..back to the point....jumping between apps with an open dialogue box...or the inability to do it now..

Is this a 'new feature' a bug or setting or what?

I know on my old 4s with pre 7 iOS, I could double tap the home icon when a dialogue box was open and jump to, say Notes, copy a setting....like a WEP key, then double tap again, and go back to the settings, and paste the copied text.

Now it seems that the only way to copy that bit of info from Notes to paste in the settings, is by hitting the Power key, and powering off..swiping to open..and getting in a quick double tap before the dialogue opens.

It seems that when a dialogue box is open, you can't double tap and close  anything ..it 'locks' to that screen.  You can't even force close that app..

For one or two dialogue boxes not an issue...but for instance the Mail app..when I have 8 e-mail accounts, ( two different business accounts, gmail, yahoo, and two private own domain accounts) and for one reason or another I don't have Wifi or cellular data..or a password is wrong...I end up having to click through up to 18 to 20   "OK" or Cancel" dialogue boxes, ( usually three per e-mail account) before I can close the app

In previous iterations of iOS with the 4s, I could double tap and swipe the offending mail app away ...not I have to click through all the bloody dialogue boxes telling me I have no connection ..can't get mail etc etc....  More than annoying..

any tips to get around this appreciated...feedback already submitted.

Hi Neil. I thought you were talking about syncing account settings. I'm not sure why others got the impression you meant messages... but oh well, let's move on.

That was exactly what I was talking about, syncing settings...Oh well.

Just clicking to dismiss the message is the problem.  With one e-mail account..not much..but with 8 it becomes extremely annoying to have to do it 8  or 16 times..and the place you click on the screen changes between each message.  This is why Double Tapping the Home Button to Close the mail app was far easier.

You could either Double tap and Close the app,

or Double Tap and jump to Notes, to Copy the requested data..a password or WiFi key, Double Tap and jump back

Now when the Box pops up with a text entry field and Keyboard you can no longer use Double tap to jump to another app or close the offending app..you have to keep clicking away all the messages.

But as Mod747 says..this is now normal on the 5s  .....so eventually original question answered...Is it Broken?   Well maybe ..no one as has been pointed out, knows Apples intentions as to if this was deliberate or planned

Just popping this in to answer a few points raised earlier.  I tried editing my first post, but got locked out when cam popped in reply

Patient monitoring equipment, including telemetry, has been cellular and WiFi tolerant for at least 20 years.  Every  hospital I know of has provided WiFi hotspots for guests and staff for a good 10 years.  If that is not the case in your location, the obsolete monitoring system is putting patients in more jeopardy than sensitivity to WiFi or cellular signals.  If you think the equipment is sensitive to cellular, "when the phone goes off", you can put it in airplane mode and then enable WiFi.

No matter if we supposedly have RF immune equipment in hospitals or not, those are the rules, in certain areas of some hospitals, so I stick by them.  It is not very professional to be using or have the phone ring, either when around relatives and patient we are transferring.    To explain further, I fly the air ambo aircraft, and we are a small team, so I am often helping collect, load, carry kit.  This means going with the transfer team to the hospital, as extra pair of hands to lift, carry or move whatever they ask.   I don't know about their equipment so i respect their rules...Sorry if that offends you.

Ever flown an aircraft and tried to talk to ATC while there are two or three phones within two feet of the headset and intercom system all chirping in the background...

What's that got to do with being in an airport, which is what you mentioned?  Checking email or doing anything at all with a phone while flying any plane is what poses a major risk.

Being in an airport..being at an airport, being on the ramp , being in the aircraft..all totally irrelevant., I felt no need to mention the exact circumstances of when i turn it off..makes no difference   I was using flight mode,  I did not see the need to elaborate...You did not need to know the reasoning behind it..anymore than that, I unfortunately gave you a vague reason, which you could have accepted, but since you del the need to know more I have tried to give you more background.

The phone needs to be flat OFF.

Utter CRAP ...at least in my aircraft.

In the old aircraft I fly, I could leave the phone on all the flight, the aircraft systems don't get interfered with to an extent that it harms navigation to ANY degree..  There is some alleged evidence that Transponders maybe affected, but I have not knowingly had this.

The major issues, so I have been told, is that a phone at altitude can confuse the cell phone network, by being in range of more than a normal number of masts.  Again no idea if that is true or not.

The biggest annoyance and danger of a phone in the cockpit of my basic light twin aircraft is simply the constant chirping in the intercom as the phones ramp up their power to maintain connection.  When you personally have 3 phones, the two medics have their private and work phones, and maybe  a relatives phone too, that can be 6 phones all within a few feet.   That many phones chirping in your headset makes a lot of noise.

Flight mode is just fine, Wifi on too is fine, but pointless, so flicking to flight mode is quick and easy.  I don't want 3 phones, but work insist I use theirs, I want to keep my own with me, and since we are back and forward between UK and Jersey I often have my cheap pay upfront phone for when I am in UK to save massive roaming rates.  All totally irrelevant of course.

If only you had said that at the start, we could have wrapped this up within two or three posts...if you check the title you will see that was my original question ...Is the Double tap feature Broken...

Using the word broken implies your phone is not functioning properly. Had you asked your question simple and clearly it would have saved us a lot of time as well. If you don't like the way the phone operates submit your feedback to Apple. We are just volunteer users and do not work for Apple.

If I was the first person to ever use that phrase in relation to new software or hardware functions or if I had said Double Tap BUTTON, then I would agree with you.

But since I used the phrase Double Tap FEATURE,  and I am not the first person to ever use the worrd 'Broken' when discussing software/firmware features that used to work one way , but now don't,  (after a change in hardware/firmware), I don't feel it implies the phone is physically broken.

It was intended to imply the phone is not functioning properly or at least differently to the 4s, in a firmware sense,

I have re read my first post and think it is clear..it states all the facts, which I then had to repeat a few times. further on in the thread.

If you go back to the first post you will see I have already submitted feedback.  I stated so very clearly in the last line.

I always go to great pains to try and include as much data as possible in a first post, to save peopel ahving to ask for other info,  I have re read my first post and as far as I can see, it is all there.

I am fully aware that members on these forums are all users as well, and that none, speak for Apple.

I do appreciate your time in trying to help me get to the bottom of this, I am not having a go at you in any way.  Just stating that I feel that I have already given all the relevant info in my first post and that to my reading and usage of the English Language it is all as clear as it can be.
