itunes says my ipod has been detected but cannot be identified properly

When I plug my Ipod nano into my computer, a window pops up in ITunes that says "an ipod has been detected but cannot be identified properly". I have followed all of the troubleshooting steps, uninstalled and reinstalled ITunes, etc. but nothing is working. My IPhone isn't detected at all. Any suggestions or ideas to help resolve this would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
