Can't resize partition - Size Greyed Out

After issues with a grey progress bar on startup I somehow managed to erase my partition despite errors (check my previous question) and reinstall Mavericks. Now, I'd like to resize my partition but the little "handle" to drag it smaller doesn't appear and the size of the partition is greyed out and I can't edit it manually. Is there an issue with the drive or that particular partition? See attached screenshot:

You have a Logical Partition (CoreStorage) for your Macintosh HD. See the field Type: in your screen shot.

Take a look at this link that shows how to use Terminal commands to resize a Logical Partition (CoreStorage).

You will have to use a couple diskutil Terminal commands to get your UUID and then to resize.

I would back up my system first.

I followed that tutorial but it returned an error:

Started CoreStorage operation

Error: -69720: There is not enough free space in the Core Storage Logical Volume Group for this operation

The second partition shows the available space as 0, is this to do with it still being "free space"? However, I try to format it to Mac OS X Extended Journaled, I hit apply and nothing happens. If I try to switch tabs it warns me to say unsaved settings, but the settings of resizing the partition don't save. I verified and repaired the disk and it returned as disk is okay.

So I managed to split the Logical Partition into two (see screenshot below) and it took up the remaining space and is now a 2 TB Mac OS Extend (Journaled) partition.

Am I looking at reformatting the first partition to the same thing? because I can't. See second screenshot.

Would doing something like the following screenshot work? How would I then merge the free space where Macintosh HD was into Macintosh HD 2?

I'm not sure what to tell you now.

Do this....

Open Terminal and type diskutil cs list and post the output here. We might be able to revert the Logical Partition back to Mac OS X without destroying any of your data/apps.

You should see something like this:

I should have mentioned, that the 2TB partition that is now Mac OS X Extended (Journaled) was originally my Bootcamp partition before I reformatted the drive as I couldn't boot into OS X.

Well, we can't revert it. Towards the bottom you'll see Revertible: No.

Sort of wished you would have mentioned that the free space was for bootcamp. 🙂

I don't know what to do now for you. I don't know if you can go back into Bootcamp and try to remove that new partition assuming Bootcamp still sees it. I'm just not sure because I've never used Bootcamp.

The only thing I would try is to back up the system, create a bootable USB thumb drive using the OS X Recovery Disk Assistant which will create the Recovery HD on the thumb drive. Then boot from that thumb drive, go into Disk Utility and try to delete both partitions and create 1 single new one.

I think so, yes.

You HAVE to do this from the Recovery HD so restart and press Command+R which should take you into the Macintosh HD's Recovery HD. Use the Disk Utility Restore tab and make your Macintosh HD the Source and your Macintosh HD 2 the Destination then click the Restore button. This should do a block copy and you should be able to boot from the Macintosh HD 2 partition. If you can, we'll go from there to delete your Logical Partition (Macintosh HD).
