iMessage conflicting with talk.google

I logged onto my Mac and saw that my iMessage wasn't working so I tried to log in. But when I went to log in, It told my I had to log in using my talk.google.com password. I don't even know what talk.google.com is and donut have an account or password for it. How do I get back into my iMessage?

Hi,

In Internet Accounts make sure the Google ID is not set for Messages.

Is it also the ID used as the iCloud ID ?

I have an external to Apple email which is my Main Apple ID. However when I joined iCloud This gave me an @me.com ID linked to the original ID.

Later I also got an @iCloud.com ID.

At the last Update I did the main ID got used as the iCloud ID (I had been syncing Contacts Apps with the @me.com one).

I had to Sign Out of the Account the Internet Accounts/iCloud was using so that I could then set Messages with the right ID and use the @me.com as the iCloud ID.

Thank you this helped but took me forever cause I didn't understand what Web mail page implied then once I figured it out then had to search forever to get to turn off "Less secure". After doing so then I was able to obtain the accounts setting window like your example picture. Then was able to type in password. Now works great 🙂I think video explanations would work better for people like me. lets call it "trouble shooting for dummies" LOL

Hi,

The site used to allow you to post Videos but no longer does. (the icon is greyed out)

I never found out why. (Probably to do with shortened URLs leading to stuff not suitable for 13 years old - how old you have to be to post here, although storage may also have been an issue).

Animated .gifs or .pngs could be used but take so long to create.

I could have posted more pics.

Glad to hear you got there in the end.

You are welcome.

Thanks for posting as it marks the older thread for a closer look by bringing it to the top of the first page again which in turn means someone else might find it useful.

Thank you so much, hopefully this is the end of the road with this madness. I never ever wanted to do the verification, I would skip it all the time, but I guess I had to at this point. It took a few tries until I realized that when the talk.google.com password pop-up window came up again, this is after going through the steps of the verification and typing in the password they gave me, I had to click other as the app then type "talk.google.com" as the name of the app. Once I did that I typed in the given password by google and my Messages signed me into my gmail account as available.

I have a problem between Google Hangouts on my iPhone (iOS 9.3.2) and Messages on my MacbookPro (El Capitan 10.11.5). OSX Messages is not seeing any out-bound text sent using the iOS Hangouts app.

- Outbound text using iOS Hangouts sent to Google Chat recipients -- do not show up on Messages chat window.

- Outbound text using OSX Messages to Google Chat recipients -- do show up on iOS Hangouts

In Messages, the address for the chat used to show "xxx@gmail.com Google Talk." Now it shows "alphanumeric string@public.talk.google.com."

It used to be seamless and both Hangouts and Messages showed both sides of the conversation regardless of the sending app/device. I'm not sure what changed or how to fix it.

Any thoughts?

Thank you!

David

Hi,

I have not got Google Hangouts on my iPhone.

I can describe things from the Mac end.

I never signed up for Hangouts as I have been using my Google ID with GoogleTalk for years.

I have never signed up for their 2 step verification but have enabled "Less Secure apps" as iChat and Messages both only use SSL to connect (so does Mail but Google used to ignore that fact as well - different servers)

This meant that Messages used the talk.google.com server it has used since iChat 3 (in iChat 3 there was not a Google entry point and you had to change the server after setting up the account)

More recently ( the last two weeks) I have been trying to reset Messages back to using the talk.google.com server as it caused Google to lock me out via Messages the other day.

I got this email

User uploaded file

The Google System seemed to identify my messages Login attempt as a different computer despite the time being my login time.

the Server has changed to gmail.com and is not using SSL and does not seem to want to change.

It would seem that Google have made some changes to the GoogleTalk and Hangout servers - probably aiming for "better" integration that is causing some headaches.

I can only suggest reviewing your settings at Google and on the devices you are using.

Ummm,

Got an email about this now being marked "Recommended"

It was posted over a year ago and the answer may no longer apply.

(I cannot get Less Secure Apps setting to allow Messages to sign in using SSL - it now accepting non SSL logins)

This is fixed by getting an "App specific password" from google for your chat program only.

Go into your google account, look for

Sign-in & security

then

Password & sign-in method

under it look for

App passwords

Generate a password by clicking the button and naming it something like "Messages on Mac"

copy and paste the password generated for you into the specific gchat account in: Messages> preferences> accounts, (gchat account)

not into the system preferences. This password is only for gchat, not your account, that password stays the same.

I know this is an old issue, however the web keeps it relevant and so I hope this helps those who find this issue as I did via the web.
