Q: iMessage conflicting with talk.google

I logged onto my Mac and saw that my iMessage wasn't working so I tried to log in. But when I went to log in, It told my I had to log in using my talk.google.com password. I don't even know what talk.google.com is and donut have an account or password for it. How do I get back into my iMessage?

    Ralph, ragnu23,

     

    Just another quick suggestion before I sign off. I have had similar issues in the past and always found it a good idea to try logging into google directly via a browser to make sure all is good. Sometimes after repeated failed attempts at logins Google may prompt you to prove your identity or some such thing.

     

    I'll leave you in Ralph's obviously capable hands and butt out now.

    Thank you again and apologies to Ralph if he felt slighted.  I did resolve this in February, working through Ralph's answer, but yours was more easily accessible and not heavy wading.  I'm glad you posted it.  It was thoughtful of you to share your answer.

    I do have 2 accounts showing, one is personal gmail and the other work gmail.  Both are showing and both I'm able to log into.

    hi,

     

    Let me check I have understood what I think  you have told me.

     

    You have two Gmail based Accounts in Messages.

    Both appear to Login and your can send messages (Instant Messages types in green Bubbles) from both IDs.

    However one of these accounts keeps getting the Pop up to ask for the Password.

     

    The picture you posted seems to suggest one of them is not logged in ?

     

    steveplz posted a pic about checking the Server details in Messages > Preferences > Accounts > Google Account > Sever Settings tab.

    Have you done this ?

     

    Are both Accounts set to use Less Secure apps at the relevant Google Settings for that account ? (i.e. you need to set it for each Account)

    I am hoping someone may be able to help me too. I hate to hijack the thread but since the op got the problem solved, maybe someone can help me.

     

    I have the same problem, except I went through all the steps listed here, and with both my google accounts(one is my apple ID), I am logged in and both accounts enabled in preferences>accounts, and I cannot send or receive iMessages or sms texts from the computer.  I did check everything mentioned here, web browser log in, message preference log in, less secure apps turned on access, etc.

     

    I checked under accounts, and server settings, all seems fine.

     

    I was getting the pop up window also, but finally went away the last try changing passwords.  Now, everything matches, both google accounts in messages are enabled, got the pop up window to go away.

     

    But, it seems my messages when I send them still say Not Delivered.  I though it was both iMessages and sms texts, but just now I got a reply text from a buddy who I sent an iMessage to a half hour ago, but did not come up on my computer messages app.  Just on my phone.  What could this be?

     

    I tried everything listed in this thread I think.  Everything seems fine.   Please help if you can.

    EDIT:  I seems now, I am receiving and able to send, iMessages only, not SMS still.  I really hope this makes sense to somebody here, because I just don't get it.  I guess its a good thing the iMessages at least are working again now.

    Hi,

     

    If you have two Google IDs and one is your Apple ID you can set up three accounts in the Messages App  (if you so wish).

     

    The Google Apple ID one should be used in the iMessages account using the Password you use at Apple for this ID.

    For this it does not need the Less Secure App setting at Google account's settings.  Your Apple ID (the Google one) should be using a password you set it up with at Apple.

     

    However you can also use this Google ID to set up a Google Account in Messages and this will need the Less Secure App setting at Google  as it is actually using the Google Talk server and needs to login to Google and does so using SSL (Which Google have deemed as "less secure").

     

    Your other Google ID can also be set up as a Google Account in Messages - it too will need the Less Secure App setting at Google.

     

    IF the iMessages Account looks like it is logged in but is retuning "Not Delivered" for every single iMessages that is sent then it is not logged in to the iMessages severs properly (If you use the ID in iTunes and other places across Apple it is likely to still work - this is about the iMessages servers use of the Apple ID and the Mac's Login with it).

     

    You can try going to Applications/Utilities and opening Keychain Access and finding all the IDS related items and deleting them  (Have the Login item selected top left and start with Passwords lower left - you may have to also check "certificates".)

     

    After this restart the Messages app.

    The IDS items should be recreated if the app gets to login properly (if the Keychain was at fault).

     

    if this does not solve the issue then you will need to contact Apple.

    You will need to explain that you are sure you have an Apple ID issue with the iMessages Servers regarding your Mac's use of the Apple ID.

    Level 1 people at Apple Support can be very Script led and you may need to ask for a Level 2 person.

    They may still insist on some checks being run.

     

    Apple ID/Account issues like this do not need Apple Care and should not Cost.

    Hi Ralph, thanks for the reply.  I did check to make sure everything checks out ok, and followed what you just said.  Ever since last night some time, after restarting the computer i believe, the iMessages started to work normal again. 

     

    Now, it seems, I still can't send or receive the regular sms texts that are in green.  Any idea what could cause this now?  Again, thank you and the iMessages are working again!  So, should I go ahead and turn the Less Secure Access off again like before this happened?  Or keep it this way?  Thanks for the help

    Hi,

     

    I checked yesterday on my iPhone and found the Text Forwarding setting had got changed (I think at the last iOS update)

    I had to reset it to link the Mac and iPhone again (New Code number)

     

    I still find I don't get a choice where I think it should be to Text(SMS) rather than iMessage (Use a Contacts Name in a Chat as a drop down in the "To" spot)

     

    I am not sure whether there is more I should be setting up or if my Mac (iMac mid 2011) is now too old for all the functions.  (I know it is now supposed to do some of the Handoff and Continuity stuff but I thought it did this).

    May main issue is finding people to test with.

     

    Previously I have seen Names in the "To" spot show Text as an option.

    However right now everyone I could iMessages is only showing iMessages as an option.

    Hey Ralph, turns out you were right.....again!  My text forwarding was turned off on my phone, I guess from the update a few days ago.  I can't tell you again how much you helped me out.  It was driving me nuts.  Can I go back and turn Less Secure option back on to be safe?  Or is it okay to keep it off?

    I have them both set to "allow access for less secure apps", since they are both gmail accounts, and one of them is my apple ID.  Just figured I would ask before running into problems again.

    Hi,

     

    I have had my Google Settings set to Less Secure Apps for some time now as both Mail and Messages make SSL connections to Google.

     

    Whilst there have been some attacks in some places on connections using SSL the numbers on impacted people is relatively small.

    On the other hand the services that allow SSL connections have the most to lose if they are seen to  insecure.

     

    At the same time there have been changes to SSL designed to strengthen it's overall security again.

     

    As I said before  the use of one of them as your Apple/iCloud ID should not be effected by this as you should be using a different Password at Apple.

    Apple are still using SSL themselves but have also been one provider that has rolled out upgrades.

     

     

    I have had no problems but I also suggest reading around a bit and making an informed choice.

    Thanks again.  You definitely helped me out.  I will leave them with access to the less secure apps for now.  So much better now that my messages are working again.
