I'm trying to download a cdv file into numbers, which I can achieve, but the data is all in one column. I've seen that it is supposed to be possible by changing delimiter preferences but I can't see how to do that.

You should be able to File > Open a well formed csv file. What does your csv file look like>

Numbers doesn't have parsing preferences like Excel does. It will do Tab separators and Comma Separators, and if you want anything else, you have to make the conversion yourself ahead of time. Tabs are the best, in my opinion. Making a CSV file for import, you need to make it a simple plain text file, not RTF, for best results.

Thanks for the reply. The csv file data appears as text in one column separated by semi colons, however Pages isn't separating the data into separate columns. I read on an older post that it should be able to change from semi colon to full stop as the delimiter but I can't see that option. I'm using OSX10.9.4

Can you open the CSV document in TextEdit?
If so, change semicolons (;) to full stops (.) or whatever your region uses as the delimiter.
In TextEdit:
Menu > Edit > Find > Find and Replace
In the Find box, type ;
In the Replace box, type .
Choose All
Save.
Does that open in columns in Numbers?

It sounds as if this CSV to Tabs on Clipboard Automator service may work for your file.
Download and double-click the workflow package to install in your Services menu. (You may need to go to System Preferences > Security & Privacy and click 'Open Anyway').
Thereafter to use:
1. In Finder, select the csv file, right-click and choose 'CSV to Tabs on Clipboard' under Services in the contextual menu:
2. Respond to the prompts to pick a delimiter; it sounds as if you need ; .
3. Then click once in a cell in a Numbers table and command-v to paste. The values should appear across multiple columns. The table will expand as needed to accommodate your data.
