Q: Adding RAM to iMac

I have a 2011 27" iMac with 2x 2GB of Ram in the 2 top slots, If I add 2 x 4GB Ram do they need to go in the top slots? Using all the four cards will this give my system the full use of 12GB or will it only be using part of the larger cards due to the smaller cards capacity??

Thanks in advance.

iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9.4)

They don't need to go in the top slots, so long as they are paired side by side. Here's my config. - been working fine since 2009:

Thanks for the reply however I am still unsure if the the two x 2GB cards prevent the 2 x 4GB cards from working at maximum capacity. I am under the impression that the new 4GB cards will be effected by the 2GB cards??

    Thanks again

There shouldn't be any problem with having 2 x 2gb installed together with 2 x 4gb, so long all the modules are to the exact spec that your Mac requires.

As per the graphic I posted, that's exactly the arrangement I have and I get a full 12gb of available RAM.
