macbook air bluetooth problem

Just purchased a new Macbook Air 13 the other day and I can't seem to connect to anything using the bluetooth. Every time I open up the bluetooth and search for devices, nothing comes up even though I have a wireless mouse, keyboard and headphones plus my iPhone 5S and iMac next to it. Bluetooth is on. Tried resetting my PRAM and SMC to see if that would help plus restarting many times. Am I being an idiot or is this a common problem?

MacBook Air, OS X Mavericks (10.9.4)

Thanks Linc. Tried all of that but still nothing. I can't help get the feeling that it's me doing something stupid but I've never had this problem with my iPhones, iPads or iMacs.

If the Bluetooth devices are already paired to another computer or mobile device, you have to delete those pairiings before you can pair again.

I just uploaded OSX again from scratch and that seems to have down the trick. Thanks for your tips
