External display shares windows an gestures

I have an external monitor that has worked for a while, but things recently started going wrong. When I plug the monitor in, all of my currently open windows are also present on the monitor, if they are in full screen they turn completely grey. All gestures that I use on either the external monitor or my macbook affect both screens. I have made sure that I'm not in mirroring mode, does anyone know what the problem could be?

Hi there whammy4G,

It sounds like your displays are sharing the same space. This setting is found in  > System Preferences... > Mission Control > Displays have separate Spaces. Take a look at the article below for more information.

If you need an app window to span multiple displays, deselect the option "Displays have separate Spaces" in the Mission Control pane of System Preferences.
