My MacBook Pro has a black screen with a white error, previous to this it kept saying my hat drive was full and I was trying to delete large movie files then it went to the black screen

Macbook Pro 2012, showing a black screen with the rainbow ball, how can I fix this?

also, before it went to the black screen I kept getting a message saying my hat drive space was very low. I was deleting movie files and emptied the trash then it went to the rainbow ball, then black screen. Any suggestions on fixing either problem, the black screen and freeing up space?
