As far as the Wi-Fi, the computer is accessing the hotspot as if it is a Wi-Fi device, since it cannot access cellular network. That is why it shows as Wi-Fi. I would say the USB connection would be somewhat more secure, since the only access outside would have is the cellular connection, whereas if you were then connecting from Bluetooth or wireless, there is another potential access point.
