Kernel panic plugging into thunderbolt displays

Hi there,

My late 2013 Macbook Pro Retina running Mavericks 10.9.4 is getting regular kernel panics, usually when plugging in to my 2 thunderbolt displays while asleep. This machine was restored from the backup of an older 2012 Macbook Pro Retina that was experiencing GPU panics. I've only had this new one for 2 weeks!

The problems sometimes happen when I plug in, sometimes unplugging.

Not sure if the following dump is helpful but it's all I have:

If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data, then reinstall the OS.* You don't need to erase the startup volume, and you won't need the backup unless something goes wrong. If the system was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you may need the Apple ID and password you used.

If you use FileVault 2, then before running the Installer you must launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the FileVault startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) It will be nested below another icon with the same name. Click the Unlock button in the toolbar and enter your login password when prompted. Then quit Disk Utility to be returned to the main Recovery screen.

There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.

If you installed the Java runtime distributed by Apple and still need it, you'll have to reinstall it. The same goes for Xcode. All other data will be preserved.

*The linked support article refers to OS X 10.9 ("Mavericks"), but the procedure is the same for OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later.

Thanks Linc. I tried re-installing as you suggested but I got another similar kernel panic as I plugged my machine back in to the thunderbolts later in the day. I don't have any 3rd party kexts as far as I can tell from the dump. I do code in Java and I'm considering reverting back to Java 6 as I don't remember these issues a few months ago before I upgraded to Java 7.

Any other ideas, before I do a fresh install? Thanks.

Aug 22, 2014 12:10 AM in response to nickfrompalo alto

I have the same problem:

Behind the panic is the switch from one graphic to the other card. This happens in various applications and also with external devices - like beamer ...

I installed gfxcardstatus to control this switch. Now I am able to avoid the panics but I cannot use the beamer.

So I will try today to set up OS Maveriks on the USB stick and boot from this and see if the switch works then ...

Feb 10, 2015 4:10 AM in response to nickfrompalo alto

I ran into the same issue.

My Hardware: Mac Book Pro Retina 15" mid 2012.

The problem occured when upgrading from Mavericks to Yosemite. In parallel I installed the latest "Thunderbird Display Update".

Since then I do get frequent (every 10-20 minutes) panic messages (see below). The call address stays the same.

Now: If I leave the Thunderbolt display unplugged, there is *no* panic at all.

Any advice? I have the feeling that rolling back the update or doing a "fresh install" will only waste my time, please don't suggest that.

Best

Hendrik
