On a computer, launch iTunes then select iTunes Store in the source list on the left.
Then click Redeem under Quick Links on the right.

do we have to activate the card since it is awhile since I used it and how do we do that
You don't need to get the card activated unless iTunes says that you do; if it does, ask the people at the store it came from or the iTunes Store staff for assistance.
