iPad Unable To Turn On *tried clicking home and lock button

My iPad is unable to turn on. I've tried pressing the home and lock button but when i do, it show's a black screen and a image saying i need to plug in for iTunes? After a minute or so, it automatically turns off. Before this happened, some of my apps and websites didn't work, such as Youtube. And so i thought i needed to update my iPad and it things went completely wrong from there.
