Q: t'fer of data from powerbook G4 to Macbook pro

I read up on prev. postings re: getting data from one mac to other using cloning or migration or other methods. Not sure in my situation which method is best.

I have an old Powerbook Mac from 2002 using 10.4.11 (which cannot be updated due to age), I also have an iBook G4 using 10.4.11 from 2005, now I have a Macbook Pro from 2009 using 10.6.8 snow leopard.

My goal is to get my iTunes and iPHoto data off the old mac, then also apps: microsoft office NK 11.3.5, adobe reader 9, adobe photoshop vs 8.0,, address book, appleworks 6.0, firefox & old bookmarks, safari & bookmarks, imovie HD 6.0, iweb 1.1.2, photo impression 5., . and some other generic data off of the old mac.

I understand that some issues will arise between compatibility etc. with versions of programs, and that I may just have to buy an iLife package to suit new computer using 10.6.8 ( does iLife still exist?)

I don't want to clone and end up with old junk off old mac, rather would start fresh and just drag over what i need document/file wise.

I copied folder of old iTunes onto usb stick but once it was on newer mac songs would not open when I opened the new iTunes mac - they're not syncing together, nor can I get my outgoing mac mail to work, so at this point I've stopped all transfer to seek help/advice here.

Old mac mail is using icloud imap acct but newer mac uses mobile me imap. It is receiving but not sending.

Thank you in advance,

Anne

You will need to buy iLife 11 from Amazon or somewhere else. The versions in the App Store are not compatible with 10.6.

Try updating iTunes to the newest version.

Thanks Eric. I will check out  iLife on AMazon - good idea. Do you know if my OS can be upgraded also so I can get later model iLife too? oR not worth it, OR not possible? I know my old mac did not support anymore upgrades of the OS b/c the machine was too old and therefore incompatible.

Hi Klaus, thank you - all those articles sound very helpful, however I must admit to being technically inept . I did deduct from your directives that my older mac uses  a PC processor and that the newer mac uses a non-PC processor (is this  intel?) and that I could have issues going from one to the other. I looked at Dropbox, but wonder what are the downsides to going that route? Not sure if I can u se the iCloud option as newer mac appears to only have mobile me not iCloud.  I wonder if it's best to just drag files from one to the other using the firewire or the ethernet cable, or if I should pay a mac pro tech. to come here to do it all for me.  My apprehension  is due to all the variations in software and computer OS and compatibility. IT's not like it's a clean swap and going from A to B.

Your old PPC applications may run in Snow Leopard via Rosetta, but not with later versions of OS X. You will need to upgrade your applications to current versions. For detailed information see this user tip:  https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-6271

Before installation you should back up all your data.

When you have installed it, run Software Update to download and install the latest updates for Snow Leopard to bring it up to 10.6.8, or download the combo update from here:

    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399

Check via Software Update whether any further updates are required, particularly to iTunes (you will need the latest version in order to synch with mobile devices).

You should now see the App Store icon in iTunes, and you now need to set up your account:

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4479

You can now upgrade to Mavericks OS 10.9 for free IF you have one of the following Macs, with not less than 2GB of RAM, and at least 8GB of available space on your hard drive:

    iMac (Mid-2007 or later)

MacBook (13-inch Aluminum, Late 2008), (13-inch, Early 2009 or later)

    MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid-2009 or later), (15-inch, Mid/Late 2007 or later), (17-inch, Late 2007 or later)

MacBook Air (Late 2008 or later)

Mac Mini (Early 2009 or later)

Mac Pro (Early 2008 or later)

    Xserve (Early 2009)

    iCloud system requirements:

    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4759

If you cannot run Mavericks you can purchase the code to use to download Lion from the App Store (Lion requires an Intel-based Mac with a Core 2 Duo, i3, i5, i7 or Xeon processor and 2GB of RAM, running the latest version of Snow Leopard):

    http://store.apple.com/us/product/D6106Z/A/os-x-lion

    or Mountain Lion:
