Maps offline

Unfortunatly Apple maps doesnt offer a tool as intuitive as google map’s offline mode ( you select an area in a big circle & download it ) where you can store all your frequent cities for offline use.

Step it up Apple... I just can’t promote such a design when there is clearly better options for saving data/battery.

Indoor guidance is cool but not nearly as much as true offline mode for several big areas.

Step it up Apple.

Excuse me, a friend has an iMac and cannot use the app MAPS while connected thru ethernet cable, he must turn the wi-fi on...I on the other hand, can do that without any problems.

He lives in Italy, I live in Poland.

Do you think it's a matter of providers? Or is he doing something wrong?

Does he have an active internet connection, other things work online through the ethernet cable ? You could try re-posting in the relevant forum on here (this thread is about Maps on iPads) and see if people have an answer

Not with the built-in Maps app nor google maps, but you might find other mapping/navigation apps in your country's app store that have maps downloaded as part of the app.

But a wifi-only iPad doesn't have a built-in GPS chip (only cellular models do), so if you want to be able to use it to locate yourself when away from a wifi network then you will need a GPS unit - there are a number of external GPS units that you could get e.g. Bad Elf make some

Here will do that. Regional or country maps can be downloaded, and it will find your approximate location using local wifi names. My wife and I used it on a recent trip to Europe. The only downside is you have to login to a local wifi for each new city you visit.

Another vote for Here app. Easy to use and free but I don't know if it works on WiFi only devices.

Yes, it does. I used an iPod touch in Europe. It checks the names of the local Wifi Routers to determine location. That's enough for most city travel.

Ok, it's no surprise if you can see your location when WiFi is available. What if you walk away from WiFi signals? How does that work? I'm sure you can see the offline map but does it update your location as you're moving about? The answer should be no because there's no GPS receiver on the device.

Not connected to a specific Wifi router, rather it uses a database of wifi router names to locate itself- Here's an article about it.

In the cities I've been to there are enough wifi signals to get you fairly close to your current location.

I've used it, so I know it works.

My iPad Mini4 w/o cell tx has a GPS chip. Maps works great as long as I am on a hotspot or wifi.

Only cellular models have a GPS chip
