OWC Mercury Electra 3G vs Crucial M500 vs Samsung 840

I have been searching tirelessly on the appropriate SSD for my late 2008 Macbook 13" and looking for some clarity (hopefully closure) on the matter.

To prevent any sidetracking, I know that the best outcome would be to buy a new computer all together, but not only am I tight on funds, but I am hoping that I can improve the computer's performance. The primary question revolves around the most suitable SSD, but I am going to throw in a question about adding a data doubler as well.

  • Between OWC Mercury Electra 3G, Crucial M500, and Samsung EVO 840, which would be the best from a performance and reliability standpoint?
    • I am aware that my Macbook 5,1 has a SATA II capability, so I may be limiting the full performance of the Samsung 840; however, several users have stated it to be the "best" for the computer. I have also read that Samsung nor Apple support this SSD and users have faced issues when installing the OS and general use.
    • I read that OWC and Crucial are designed more for Macs and provide support, but the curve is always with the EVO where people swear its the one to use.
    • Does a larger capacity (such as 250 over a 120) improve read/write speeds?
  • As for the data doubler, I was told by someone at Apple that in addition to a SSD, a Data Doubler with a fusion/hybrid drive would make it a sweet computer for its age, consider the Super Drive can be swapped with a HD.

Slight concern is that the aluminum caddy's may cause heating issues, but I read somewhere the applying tape or something to separate more space would alleviate it? Not 100% on that.

Would either of these cases (or perhaps both) cause my battery life to run shorter? I heard that the Super Drive is only powered when you use it where as replacing with a HD would cause it to continuously run, resulting in lower battery life.

For what it's worth - I simply want my computer to run faster as I am using some Pro apps on my computer, and wouldn't mind having a second drive for storage locally inside the computer. I do have an external hard drive, but it would help from having to carry it everywhere with me.

I know I'm slapping a lot at the forum at once, but these are all the specific questions I have and hoping to have them addressed inside one forum as my scavenge hunt has been hit and miss.

Thank you!

branen, kudos to you for doing your due diligence. I'd recommend getting everything from OWC, their prices are competitive and their customer service when it comes to Mac specific issues is second to none. If you're willing to sacrifice your optical drive for a second drive, either SSD or spinning hard drive, be aware that doing so is relatively major surgery whereas just replacing the hard drive with an SSD is literally a 15-20 minute job. I don't have data to back it up but I'd imagine that a mechanical hard drive in the optical bay would use more battery than an SSD.

Whatever you decide I can assure you that you'll be blown away by how fast your computer boots, opens applications, reads and writes to the SSD. I put an SSD in my 2009 MacBook ( a Samsung 840 - not evo) and it's the single best computer upgrade I've ever done.

Mike,

Thanks so much for getting back to me, and I appreciate the insight. I have heard a lot of great things about using OWC and Macs together. The only thing that threw me off was when you said that you used Samsung 840. What made you choose Samsung over OWC? It seems that's the one to use, but OWC is the safe route?

Thanks again!

When I bought mine Samsung was selling their 840 and their 840 Pro. I got a great deal on the 840 from Amazon so I rolled the dice, it's been great. Since that time Samsung has replaced the regular 840 with the Evo line And SSD have gotten even more popular causing more love/hate reviews. I don't have any problems with my 840. I recommended OWC because if you're going to go the Data Doubler route they wil be able to supply everything including customer service should you need it. Simply replacing the hard drive with an SSD is easy, removing the optical and replacing it with an SSD is quite a bit more involved.

Got it. One last question:

I'm buying a SSD for the main drive. Should I just use the Seagate Momentus HD 500gb (7200 RPM ST9500424AS) for the optical drive swap? Or would purchasing a hybrid drive improve overall performance?

I read that I could just make this a fusion drive, which is why I'm considering leaving my original HD in there, but I'd be willing to drop a little extra if it makes a difference on heat/battery life.

Thanks for all the help, Mike!
