Q: Hello everyone please help me

Hello everyone, I am having a major problem with my mac.  I bought my macbook pro in 2010 (the model is 2010 mid year)

My macbook pro will not turn on, it will only go to the screen where the apple logo comes on with a progress bar below it. The progress bar gets to 1/8 full then it shuts off completely.  When I turn it back on it does the same thing.  Unfortunately, I do not have a backup of my stuff on my macbook.  I hate myself for not having one.  I can only go into recovery mode on the macbook pro. I tried fixing the disk by clicking repair.  After verifying the disk it repairs it then i get the message where it says "try to backup as much as you can, reformat the disk, then install the os software again" I wanted to know if there is anyway i can save my information from my hard drive.  I bought a seagate 1tb external hard drive today with hopes of saving my information.  I accidentally unmounted the Macintosh hard drive and now I cant mount it back on.  It comes up with an error.  Can someone please help me back up my information (im really worried about losing pictures) Thanks again everyone for your time.

1. Macbook pro  starts up with apple logo on greyish screen and progress bar.

2. Goes 1/8th of the way then shuts off completely

3. It does this on all start ups

4. Went into recovery mode and the disk cant be repaired, (message comes up saying backup as much as you can reformat disk and then install software)

5. Accidentally unmounted Macintosh Hard drive in recovery mode

6. Want to recover my information like pictures from hard drive onto my backup i recently bought.

Thanks again

MacBook Pro

OS X- Gray progress bar appears under Apple logo during startup

Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks without erasing drive

    Boot to the Recovery HD:

Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.

    Repair

When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu.

Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks

OS X Mavericks- Reinstall OS X

OS X Mountain Lion- Reinstall OS X

OS X Lion- Reinstall Mac OS X

Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet

if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

Hi Kappy thanks for the quick reply.  The S.M.A.R.T. status of the drive is verified.  When I click on repair disk, it says in red after checking the system etc.. "The volume Macintosh HD could not be verified completely. Then in black "Volume repair complete.  Updating boot support partitions for the volume as required."  Then it says in red again "Error: Disk utility cant repair this disk... disk, and restore your backed-up files

Then a pop up comes saying Disk Utility stopped repairing "Macintosh HD"  Disk Utility cant repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files.

Any more advice? Thanks again for the quick reply

Backup your files, if possible. Use Disk Utility to partition and format the drive, then reinstall OS X.

If you are not able to startup the computer in order to access your files, then you can try connecting to another Mac either by Firewire or Thunderbolt and accessing the hard drive by using Target Disk Mode. Or you can remove the hard drive, replace it with a new drive. Get an external enclosure for the original drive so you can connect it to the computer once you have installed OS X on the new drive. If the drive is accessible then you can restore your files from it.
