Q: Wake from Sleep or Shutdown: 2009 MBP Mavericks

i tried researching this about a year ago, checked all my settings and basically chalked this up to my computer feeling like it was a dud straight out of the box. anyway, today i woke the computer from shutdown and it took something like a minute and a half - first showing battery change and grey screen, then going to icons on the desktop, then hanging for awhile and then finally showing dock icons and apparently ready to use. this seems like a very long hang time and when i combine this with the funky behavior out of sleep (essentially the same thing AFAIK) it seems like something is wrong that has never been addressed properly.

i can't really remember if this got worse with my move to mountain lion or to mavericks but the sleep, wake, battery power on this machine has always been a bit of a nightmare.

are the new ones any better or do they have the same issue?

am i missing something? is this normal operating procedure for these laptops?

MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9)

    Hi hotwheels 22,

I apologize, I'm a bit unclear on what you are describing. It is normal for a machine to take a minute or two, depending on config, to start up from a complete shutdown. A wake from standard sleep should be much faster. If you are having issues putting your MacBook Pro to sleep or waking it from sleep, you may find the troubleshooting steps outlined in the following article helpful.

If you are seeing what appears to be a loading screen when waking from sleep, you may also be experiencing issues with Safe Sleep, in which case you may find this article useful:

hi. thanks. sorry for the confusion. it is actually very hard to figure out what is going on so even asking the question is a bit tricky.

as an example, just now, i closed the top of my laptop while it is not plugged into power - then came back and opened the lid and had to wait with a black screen for 1 1/2 to 2 minutes (i timed the last 1 minute on my iphone after waiting for awhile, pulling out my phone and then finding the timer app...).

this has been pretty typical on this machine since owning it. the white light on the front is usually on and in the past i have sometimes had to do a shut down and then a restart because it seemed like it took to long or because i didn't understand what was going on and it went on so long.

i have printed out what seemed to be the appropriate docs but since this machine is 2009 it seems like it is not a "deep sleep" issue. also, i /think/ i get the same kind of behavior when it is plugged in or when starting from a shutdown. in all cases it has always seemed like it takes an ETERNITY for this machine to get ready to use...

    Hi hotwheels 22,

Based on your description, it still sounds like it may be a Safe Sleep and/or power management issue (Safe Sleep was introduced to certain models starting in 2005). Do you ever see a grey bar or spinning grey progress wheel when waking from sleep? Any differences between closing/opening the display and manually putting the machine to sleep from the Apple menu? I would double-check the troubleshooting steps outlined in the above linked articles, in particular the portion on resetting the SMC:
