My daughter, my son, and myself all have iPhones on the same plan. When my daughter downloads apps they show up on my sons phone. Also any of my pictures on my phone are showing up on my sons phone. What is the reason for this? Is there anything that can be done to stop this from happening?
Yes, there is.
For apps download:
Settings > iTunes & App Store > Automatic Downloads > switch of the Apps ( and other options ) on the iPhone that do not want this.
For Pictures:
Switch off Settings > iCloud > Photos > My Photo Stream.
For the sake of simplicity:
Use the same purchasing Apple ID on all devices in Settings > iTunes & App Store > Apple ID: to share purchased books, music & apps.
To stop automatically download see above.
For all other Apple services (iCloud, FaceTime, Game Center, iMessage, etc. each device owner should have its own Apple ID.

You are sharing an Apple ID. That's generally not a good practice. New Apple IDs can be created at http://appleid.apple.com. If you really want to keep on using one ID, you can go to Settings > iTunes & App Stores, and turn off Automatic downloads.
