Q: Macbook Pro is running slow after mavericks upgrade

Hello everyone,

I recently downloaded the last update of Mavericks on my Macbook pro (13 inch, mid 2012).

Since the upgrade, my mac has been incredibly slow... I have tried different things including: completely re downloading and installing mavericks, running the apple hardware test (both short and long tests), I have tried to fix it through resetting the macbook to factory settings. None of my attempts were successful.

The Hardware:

Mid 2012 Macbook Pro.

Running OS X 10.9.4 Mavericks

2,5 GHz intel Core I5

4GB 1600 MHz DDR3

The Problem:

I updated Mavericks to its last version (10.9.4) and all of a sudden my macbook became super slow. It had no problem before, even under Mavericks, so my guess was it is a problem linked to this last version...

What I've Done Thus Far:

- Apple Hardware Tests (both long and short): All passed

- Reinstalled Mavericks

- Restoring to factory settings

Any suggestions on what do to?

Thank you!

Nathan.

Please describe the problem in as much relevant detail as possible. The "etrecheck" fad hasn't made that step any less necessary. The better your description, the better the chance of a solution.

For example, if the computer is slow, which specific actions are slow? Is it slow all the time, or only sometimes? When did it start to be slow? Did you change anything just before it started? Have you seen any alerts or error messages? Have you done anything to try to fix it? Most importantly, do you have a current backup of all data? If the answer to the last question is "no," back up now. Ask if you need guidance. Do nothing else until you have a backup.

    Hello,

The computer is slow for pretty much anything, from starting the computer to typing text. If I try to watch a movie, it keeps stopping.

It started being slow after the last mavericks update. My computer had no problem under mavericks at all until I updated to 10.9.4 . I've had Mavericks on my MacBook for a long time, so I don't think mavericks itself is the problem, but maybe a glitch or something in this last update. I haven't seen any message error, only "beach balls".

I Have tried to reinstall mavericks which didn't work, I have also run the apple hardware test (the short and long) and they both passed.

I restored factory settings on my Macbook thinking it might change something but it didn't.

It's pretty much everything I tried so far. I do not have a backup with time machine, but I did a manual backup so all the file I need are safe.

Also, lately I have been think of upgrading my macbook pro from 4 GB RAM to 8 GB RAM or more, could this help or be useful at all?

    Thank you,

    Nathan.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.

The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages

from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

              View ▹ Show Log List

from the menu bar at the top of the screen. Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then take one of the actions that you're having trouble with. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.

Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

I have tried to fix it through resetting the macbook to factory settings.

If that means that you erased the startup volume, installed the OS, and then reproduced the problem without installing any other software or restoring any data from a backup, then the cause is a hardware fault. Test with all peripherals disconnected. If there's no change, see below.

Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider. You may have to leave the machine there for several days.

Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional—ask if you need guidance.

If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.

Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair

Apple also recommends that you deauthorize a device in the iTunes Store before having it serviced.

*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

I understand, but why would the problem show up after an upgrade then?

Anyway, I am gonna take my last shot tonight by trying a clean install. If it doesn't work, I'll have it serviced.

Thank you for your help, I will keep you posted whether it works or not.

    Nathan.

    Hello,

I have the same model and the same problem.

I bought my macbook pro past december (2013) and it never worked properly.

Everything is laggy, softwares take ages to open, beach ball appears all the time and freeze the computer.

I'm not using fancy software, only safari, keynote, pages and adobe reader.

It should be way faster than it is. My old white macbook unibody from 2009 run faster than this one ...

I decided to call Apple cause I suspected a Hardware problem as the problems were still there after a clean install of mavericks.

They sent me to Opal company (Apple authorized Repairs). After few days they told me that my laptop was perfectly ok and that the performances were great.

I was kind of ****** off ... This macbook is obviously very slow. All my colleagues work on mac and none of them have such bad performances even with older model.

I can't do anything more cause according to them the machine is fine.

I'm very disappointed by Apple. I paid lot of money to get this machine and I need it to work.

+ I can see that my case is not isolated according to the number of topics talking about this problem spread on internet.

The warranty dead line approaches and I'm afraid I'll have to deal with this laggy laptop untill I get enough money to buy a new one ...

Hope you'll be more lucky than me

    Regards
