I bought my son iphone5c for Xmas on Vodafone pay and go was working fine then about a month ago just stopped has no signal and just sat searching in top left hand corner

You said it's a pay and go. Is the account paid up and still active?

Also just noticed in the settings there's is no carrier setting any ideas as to why

Try doing a reset on the phone. Hold the sleep/wake and home buttons together until you see the Apple logo and then release. The phone should reboot. See if this changes things. If that does not, I suggest containing your carrier to have them check the SIM.
will try reset thanks but as for the sim we have tried a sim from same carrier but still no luck, when I reset will he lose any stuff he has saved on the phone
A reset will not affect data. If another SIM from the same carrier will not work, then I would try to reset network settings if the reset I described does not work. Go to Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings. See how that works. The last two steps in troubleshooting are restore from backup or restore as new. If no joy there, then make an appointment at the nearest Apple Store to have the hardware checked.
Remove SIM card and wipe with a lint free cloth put SIM card back in and see
what happens if it stil will not work take phone to phone shop for a new SIM card
