I read a similar question from someone else the the response said to swipe up and turn the button off. What button? When I swipe up all I have is the volume, brightness, airplane mode, mute, sound, wifi and bluetooth buttons. None of them turn it off.

It is orientation lock.
Landscape or portrait mode.
Settings > General > Lock Rotation > using Mute switch or here in settings.

The lock rotation can be turned on by the side switch or Control Center. If you have the side switch set to lock rotation on settings> general> side switch it will say mute in Control Center.
