'lost' most music on a botched sync

recently tried to sync my iPhone 4s with MacbookAir, especially to get the music from the laptop onto the phone. My iTunes music library included both purchased and ripped CDs. After the sync - in which I clearly did something wrong- the music on the laptop is largely unavailable to me. For most of it I get the message that the song or album cannot be located. In addition on some of the albums it might have taken one or two songs and the rest are not there. I really want to have the music back on the laptop and available to me. Can anyone help me to retrieve the music or return the laptop to an earlier time- i.e., before the sync? Thank you for any assistance!

Hi learningtoloveapple,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities.

It sounds like iTunes is unable to locate some of the media that you would like to play in iTunes and sync to your iPhone. The article linked below describes how iTunes stores media, where you might be able to find the missing media and how to prevent it from happening again.

I hope this helps.
