Q: Inserting a switched - is it ok?

Can I insert a 5 or 8 port 10/100 ether-fast switch in between primary base station 1 and extended base station 2 to permit more expansion options?  If so, will the signal be degraded at all?

Yes, you can. It has absolutely no effect on the signal.

Not OK, if your "main" AirPort base station is an AirPort Extreme or Time Capsule, since the 10/100 switch is going to slow down network communications dramatically for devices that are located "downstream" from the switch.

To prevent the switch from bottlenecking the rest of your network, use a 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet switch to match the Gigabit ports on the AirPort Extreme or Time Capsule.

Thanks Bob. So long as the switch is a 10/100/1000 gigabyte switch, then I should be ok?   I'm trying to eliminate much of the cable boxes in my home and convert to AppleTV, Netflix, etc., so I don't want to lose any speed.
