Modified HTML code created with iWeb fails to update

Hi. I have a bunch of iWeb files used to create a simple Web site. I want to change ONE word of text in the HTML file, the only one with the actual text for the page. All the support files are graphics files (png, jpg) and there's a .css file and a .js file as well. These exist for every page on the site.

I opened the relevant HTML file in Text Wrangler and made the change. Saved the file. The modified file shows up in the Finder with the new timestamp. Groovy. However, if I then open the file in Safari to display the actual page + graphics + navigation, it displays the OLD text. Can someone tell me what's going on and how I can modify the text. For that matter, where on earth is Safari getting the old text from in the first place. That file has been overwritten.

Oh, I am doing this on a new iMac with Mavericks. I haven't had a copy of iWeb for several years. I thought it was a problem with the browser cache, but closing and reopening the browser did not help. I also created a test version of the modified file with a new name and opened that in Safari but it too displayed the same strange behavior (the unmodified text). Whenever I examine the text in Text Wrangler, the modification is there, however.

iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2013), OS X Mavericks (10.9.4)

I see what the problem is. It's not the browser. The problem is that the HTML text is encoded in a small .png file that cannot be modified. Here's a snippet of the relevant code. As you can see the code references "shape image_2.png." That file contains the same text as shown below, but unmodified, of course. Since I don't have iWeb on Mavericks, I have no way of regenerating the PNG file. Kind of a problem since I can't modify or update my site. Good old Apple.

Yes. You'll need to activate the Develop menu before the key combination works.

You might try the following;

1 - enter the correct code in Text Wrangler or other text editor.

2 - take a screenshot of the code.

3 - convert the screenshot to a .png file and size it to be the same as the original png file, shape image_2.png.

4 - locate where the file is stored in the website folders and replace it with the new png fle.

NOTE: be sure to make a backup of the iWeb site folder so that you can fall back on it if the substitution fails.

Hmm. That's not going to work. The text in the PNG file has already been laid out correctly - proper typeface, spacing, alignment, background. Taking a screenshot of the code, or even the text, in Text Wrangler, is going to give me a graphic image of the code, not the final design contained in the original PNG file. I suspect I'd have to use something like InDesign to lay out the text correctly and create a PNG from that. Don't have InDesign, however. I'll need to figure some way to recreate the Web page in some other application and create a PNG from that.

If you're going to be managing this site an others in the future it might be a good time to migrate to another web development application that is being supported by the developers and is up to date as far as available features.

Many have gone over to EverWeb because of it very iWeb like graphic user interface and it's similar drag and drop capability. If you're familiar with HTML code Flux 4 is a good app. It has both WYSIWUG text entry as well as easy HTML code entry. The newer version just released, Flux 5, doesn't have the WYSIWUG text entry as yet and is more difficult to enter or modify text. I have both versions and prefer V4 at this time.

In any case iWeb had been somewhat dead fore the last 2 years and should be replaced.

Thanks, appreciate the reply. This Web site is a one-off - basically my personal Web site and one that's not terribly active to begin with. I'm not a Web developer and don't manage other Web sites so I'm not sure I want to invest in another tool (time and money). I was a user of Go Live before it was bought by Adobe, but that's going back a number of years. Thanks for the references to other applications. Yes, I know iWeb has been orphaned. Was too much of a kludge to begin with but it served my purposes at the time.
