Trouble connecting to iPad's hotspot by both connection methods

I'm trying to connect to my iPad Mini's hotspot from a REALLY old laptop that doesn't even have WiFi. To use WiFi, I plug in a USB Wireless Nano Adapter, a small USB device, to enable me to use WiFi through it. Its software detected my iPad's network, but won't connect to it and won't give me an error message. Instead of keeping trying, I just decided to use the USB connection method instead.

The laptop, which runs Windows XP, detected the iPad as a camera and didn't mention Apple at all. In the list of network services, the iPad's network isn't there. I think I may need to install Apple device USB driver or something like that. Pls suggest anything. All help is appreciated. Thanks.
