Q: Remove debit card from my son's iTunes account

Hi, my 11 year old son has had an iTunes account (which is linked to his mother's debit card!) for the past 2/3 years now, since we got him an iPad.

When we were registering it for him, I knew there was a way of registering new iTunes accounts without linking credit/debit cards to them but we struggled to do this so my wife linked hers, against my advice!

Anyway, today after realising my son had "accidentally" spent £70+ through in-app purchases (over the past couple of days!) and after 2/3 years of "mysterious" card debits from the wife's bank account (£8.97 here, £9.99 there, £14.97 here..... they all add up) I think it's time to find out how to un-link her debit card from his iTunes account, because the more he spends, the more she asks from me!!!

I don't want to just create a fresh account from scratch because he'll lose all his previous purchases which he's paid (LOL) a lot of money for.

Any advice on how to un-link a debit card from an 11 year old's iTunes account without the need for another would be very much appreciated,

Cheers.

On your computer's iTunes you should be able to edit the account's payment info by going into the Store > View Account menu option and logging into the account, and on the account's details page there should be a payment link.  If you are doing it on the iPad then tap on the id in Settings > iTunes & App Store and tap on 'View Apple ID' on the popup and log into the account  - that should also give you a payments link on your account's page.

    Changing payment info : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1918

If you don't get the 'none' option on the account : http://support.apple.com/kb/TS5366

You can also turn off the ability to do in-app purchases on the iPad via Settings > General > Restrictions > In-App Purchases 'off', and you can require the account's password to be entered for every download from the stores : Settings > General > Restrictions > Require Password set to 'Immediately' - or you can hide the App Store ('Installing Apps', though that will also stop apps being synced to it from a computer's iTunes) and iTunes store apps via Restrictions

For what has been purchased, though purchases are considered final but you could try the 'report a problem' link to contact iTunes Support and see if they will refund or credit you : http://reportaproblem.apple.com

If the 'report a problem' link doesn't work then you can try contacting iTunes Support via this page : http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/ - click on Contact iTunes Store Support on the right-hand side of the page, then Purchases, Billing & Redemption
