Q: Problems with start up after installing OS X Mavricks

I have just installed OS X Mavricks on my macbook pro, currently running 10.6.8 and upon start up, it stops on the grey screen, alternating between the apple icon and an error sign (a crossed out circle). I tried the safe boot and still no luck.
