Q: Clarification about Airplay delay

(MBP 2.5GHz, OSX 10.9.4, 8GB)

Hi all,

in Mavericks' "System Preferences -> Audio" I can select an Airplay device for "sound output", and that basically redirects all my system's sound to it. The issue is that all sounds are sent to the Airplay device with a 2 seconds delay.

My expectation as a user is that when I chose a sound output device in the system settings, I click on something and I hear a "click" immediately, not two seconds later. It seems so crazy to me that I really hope I got it wrong.

I know this is the way Airplay works, and apps that support Airplay natively take the buffering delay into account and synchronize video accordingly, but then I can't see the point of making Airplay a system-wide setting. Am I missing something?

Thanks in advance for all thoughts and opinions!
