Of course Ogelthorpe is right: uninstall McAfee. May already solve the issue. Look here: https://community.mcafee.com/message/285079.

-- uTorrent is basically inviting to "illegal" downloads. There are disadvantages to all Torrent apps: they broadcast a lot of data about you (otherwise the seedpeers/ trackers will not cooperate) and they often are packed in a untrustworthy installer. So try to avoid apps like that.

-- I have some special personal preferences also: a. uninstall Flip4Mac, you will not miss it, and if... use an App like VLC (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/).

b. Perian is not supported anymore, but almost all codecs are used in "standard" apps, so you will not miss it, if not... install it again. I have never seen any problems with Perian in Mavericks, but afaik it is not compatible anymore in Yosimite.

c. delete com.hp.messagecenter.launcher.plist and com.hp.productresearch.plist (even if you have a HP printer) from /Library/LaunchAgents/ .

-- Delete the secretly installed GoogleUpdater (google.keystone), when you can not find it look here: http://wireload.net/products/guu-google-update-uninstaller/

disregard all ads by MacKeeper , LittleSnitch and the like on that page and other sites. Uninstall with GUU and click the lock, so that this GoogleUpdater cannot be installed again. After that you can uninstall GUU.

Have fun,

Lex

OK, we do it like this:

Finder: MacintoshHD-->Library-->LaunchAgents in this folder delete the two mcafee plists

(being there delete the two hp entries at the same time)

Finder: MacintoshHD-->Library--> LaunchDaemons in this folder delete the three mcafee plists

(being there delete the two hp entries at the same time)

Finder: MacintoshHD-->Library-->ApplicationSupport in this folder delete all folder(s) with mcafee in the name.

RESTART.

in SystemPreferences-->Users&Groups-->LoginItems remove all entries with the minus sign underneath.

Restart agin.

Uninstall uTorrent.

See if this is enough: produce a new etrecheck list.

One or both of these removal instructions may be applicable.

How to install or uninstall McAfee Internet Security for Mac

How to uninstall and reinstall McAfee Agent 4.x on Macintosh computers

uTorrent remains active. If it has been used to download and install illegally distributed or "cracked" software, you may have already installed malware that EtreCheck is not designed to reveal. Merely removing uTorrent would not be sufficient to address that possibility.

Hi John,

thanks for your help. I am travelling for 7 days and have only a half hour "free" once in a while.

About the torrent app: I have the impression that is is more likely music or movies downloaded. In that case the damage is contained.

If it is apps, most of the time the hosts file is compromised too.

The OP knows best what it was.

I hope that with all help found here he solves the issue.

I would not make either assumption. rhycefromtusmore provided no information regarding its use.
