Q: My iMac boots up and I login and then I get a white screen. How do I fix this?

My iMac boots up ok. I get to the login screen where I can select which user to login as, however once I've selected a user account (it doesn't appear to matter which one) I then get a white screen.

I don't know where to look to identify my exact operating system as I cannot get to the Apple icon to check About This Mac.

I have booted up in safe mode, recovery mode and done fsck -fy , it all suggests my iMac is ok but I still get the white screen. Does anyone know what I should try next?

Does it boot okay in the Safe Mode and can you access the  menu there to see what OS you are running? While in the Recovery Mode, did you try running Disk Utility Repair Disk and Repair Permissions?

Thank you Eric. I cannot get to the Apple menu in safe mode. In Disk Utility, I have verified the disk and it suggest all is ok. I will have a good read of the two links you have posted, a quick scan of the first looks promising as it appears to cover what is happening. I will update on the results.

Eric,
problem resolved using Safe boot. It seems that what I had thought I had done previously as a Safe Mode boot was not actually that. Using the instructions you posted the link to, explained more clearly how to enter Safe Mode than other instructions I found on the internet. Anyway, once I booted into Safe Mode and logged in, I then did a restart and the problem was resolved!
