iPhone5 question.

I have an iPhone 5 that I have been syncing to the same computer for two years. Now when I connect the phone to the computer using a USB cable, I get a message saying the USB device has malfunctioned and is not recognized by Windows. It seems the issue started after the last software update - but not sure. I have an iPad 2 that syncs with the same computer and it works fine. Any ideas? Note - I am also having issues with receiving text messages from certain people. I can send text messages to their phone, and they receive them, but I do not get their texts. Any ideas?
